On Fathers Day last year Matthew Heights life was thrown into turmoil when he suffered from a massive stroke that turned everything he knew upside down.

But the road to recovery has been made easier for the Height family thanks to the support of the greyhound racing community.

Seven months on from the life-threatening stroke, the father of two boys has been on a difficult journey that saw him not leave hospital until mid-January.

Matts father Ken said the greyhounds had been a crucial part of his sons recovery.

They are the backbone, he concentrates on greyhound racing, Mr Height said.

Matts five months in hospital didnt offer much joy but one exception was the day Traralgon trainer Terri Morris paid a visit with her dog Jesaulenko in tow, not only a champion greyhound but one that Matt is a particular admirer of.

He (Jesaulenko) climbed up on that bed and just fell asleep, I will never forget the grin on Matts face, Ken said.
Formerly a President of the Warragul Greyhound Racing Club, members from his local club as well as police officers from the region have rallied behind Matt.

At the ripe age of 18 Matt joined the police force and his career as an officer flourished from there.

The Dux of Detective School in 1998 at the Victoria Police Academy, Matt went on to solve a major cold case and featured on Channel 9 show Insight for his work in solving one of Victorias complex murders.

Eventually the intensity and pressure of the high-profile role grew old and Matt made the decision to move to Warragul where he set up a 50-acre greyhound property. He now resides in Yarragon.

A sergeant at Warragul, Matt most recently moved to Neerim Police Station where hes the Officer in Charge, also balancing his passion for the dogs which had led him to both train and breed litters.

Other than his family, those dogs are his life and give him something to look forward to, his father said.

Since Matts stroke Mr Height has taken his sons dogs in and raced them along the way. Matt also has a GAP dog Flynn that sits by his wheelchair every day.

Matts been to two race meetings now and thats given him a real buzz.

I said to Matt the other day, I want to do more for you, more than this one and a half day a week, but he said to me, dad youve saved me from going insane because of the work youve done with those dogs.

Now seven months down the track, Matt is undergoing both occupational and physiotherapy every day.

His current condition is that he has paralysis down the entire left hand side of his body. The therapy is part of a massive attempt to get the left side of his body working, Matts wife Meagan said.

Weve had no response from his hand or arm so far, but weve had a little bit from the leg which might be enough for him to walk in the future.

Matts skull still needs to be replaced after it was removed to allow the brain room to swell.

Meagan said the support from the greyhound racing industry had been absolutely phenomenal and that her family has been supported in so many ways.

When everything happened the phone was ringing off the hook and people still continue to send their love and support. Matt has formed those beautiful relationships over the years and when something like this comes along people stand by you so fiercely.

A major fundraiser will be held for Matt on April 21 at the Warragul Greyhound Racing club with proceeds raised on the night to go towards a wheelchair accessible van.

Matts father said he would also like to thank all the people who have supported their family along the way.
The greyhound community, as well as the police have been sensational, Ken said.

An enormous thank you to the greyhound people, its really been unbelievable.

Right here Gorden just pledge $100 bucks

Then pass on the money directly to Warragul Greyhound Club ..

I don't want to complicate it so once all moneys have been handed over to Warragul Club ..

The Draw can be done on the day by any Committee Member at Warragul or even Matt Height himself ...on or after the day ...

If we can get 50 people at 100 bucks each then thats $5000 grand directly to Matt ..
Kiowa Mon Manny is a SIRE of SIRES......Needs no further Comment ...

I have been friends with the Height Family since I brought my first greyhound back in 1984,Matt and the entire Height family deserve all the support they get,so lets all get behind this Fundraiser and help Matt get the items he needs to help make his and his familys life easier.
Do Warragul know about this,if so I can give my money tomorrow night.Just post here if I can do it tomorrow.
Already booked a table for 4 people for the night.
Hope to see plenty there.

Julie . Thanks for the support
The Club and Matt are not aware of this .
feel free to drop your money into the Club directly ...
I don't know Matt or his family personally but this is a good cause....

Your word here is good enough to be in the draw for a Kiowa Mon Manny Vial .

$200 so far is a very good start and it only takes 50 people before all pledges will be closed ..

$5000 is the Target so let's see some people dig deep and give $100 to a very good cause ..
100% of all money raised will go to Matt Height and his family ..

Trent ..

No Account sorry i am winging it so i hope that's cool...lol just pay the club and you get two Tickets ..

$400 so far ..

All money will reach Matts hands either way ..so that's all that matters ..I dont want to handle the money side so it easier just to pay the club say it is for Matt Height ...I think the club or Matt can pull the name out when we have 50 Pledges of $100 or I will get Tong Gallagher on you Tube doing it ..lol.....
This has not been organised by the Club so they won't no nothing i just decided myself Trent to raise some money for a Greyhound Family using the Data Members

something different only by posting here on Data can you Pledge $100...and be in the draw

Buy one buy two buy one for a mate's Birthday i do not care as long as we reach 50 pledges of $100 and the money gets payed to Matt or the Club then Bingo we have achieved something ...

1 in 50 chance not bad odds for $100 bucks and i have almost talked myself into buying two Pledges myself ..lol

Julie..
the Club can share it on there page if they want .

Nothing personal

I share everything .... only to the Groups who share Datas Content .....and i am sorry to say no GOTBA or Clubs have NOT shared any content from Data and this was after sharing everything i could for years from the Clubs and all over but there has to come a time when it is a two way street ..

This is why i do my own thing and wing it is simple to do in LIFE nothing complicated

it is what it is

Pay $100 ...we get 50 pledges...

Warragul Facebook page has only 6 LIKES for Matts night on the 21st ..

Here we have almost 300 views.... 50 of them are mine .. but that's beside the point ..lol

Hi Kevin. The Warragul club does appreciate the sentiments and the effort going towards the Matt Height night. A dedicated greyhound man, he's been dealt a severe blow, and all contributions certainly go towards a good cause. I have just made the Manager, Adrian Scott, aware of the assistance coming from Data.

Other greyhound Clubs will contribute on the night, with some already runnng events to swell the coffers. Their participation and support are also greatly appreciated. Every single dollar donated goes to the Height family. The Club is seeking suitable items to be auctioned on the night. Thanks all.

Hi Phil
Thanks for the update and as you know all the financial help Matt and his family can get is just a very small part we all can do .

I did not want to go the way of the Club Auction as i feel many vials get under valued this way but maybe that's just me thinking ..lol.
...
I feel by doing this on DATA is the way to go so it reaches further .and we can achieve $5000 then thats a bonus.

So far we are getting people reading and sharing so at least that gives people something to talk about Phil and we are creating AWARENESS to this much needed Cause ...
