These are my figures when breeding a litter depending on size but for this i will say a litter of 8 to Barcia Bale and i work fulltime and get someone to whelp down for me.

Service Fee;$3300
Straw Transfer; $47
Insemination Fee; $600
Whelping; $3500 (Dam and pups to 12 weeks)
Cesarean if needed; $900
6 week inoculations; $240
12 week inoculations; $320.
Litter Registration; $150
Overall for me Best Case $8147.
Worst Case $9047.

Same boat as you Luke I pay for it all. I wish that were it.

My version.

Agist bitch for the year $3,000 as a starting point.
Whelping $5,000.
Insemination $850.
Ceasarian allowance $1,000.
Registrations and implications. $500.
Service fee. My average is about $3,500.

For me it is about a $14,000 exercise to get em to 3 months of age. Regardless I don't think it is the money. It was the same for me 2 years ago roughly as it is now.

It comes down to one thing and one thing only in my opinion for most. Will the dogs chase.

People will always take risks and take a punt but the chase bit is what is the single biggest thing.

People are scared of paying what they have to pay and not being able to get those half chasing fair dinkum. Simple as that.

I have taken a decision to basically stop breeding. I am buying though as I feel that is a better model for me.

I have recently committed to buying pups from the following litters.

Banjo boy is the sire of them all.

Banjo bewdy.
Aeroplane Katie
Aeroplane becky
Hopefully Cash rules
Hopefully Bells are ringin
Hopefully Alexis Kelton
Princess Sophia

Its scary when it broken down like that isn't it.
I only breed for myself and just pay whats needed when it comes through.Yes ive got all those same costs, apart from someone welping the litter for me.
Sometimes I believe it so much easier to just go and buy a couple of pups.Thats what I intended to do.
But guess what, ive got another off being served at the moment,to go through it all again.
Empty pockets again.

Did the relevant Control Boards take this cost into account on top of new fee's for broods and pups etc?

Of course they have, thats why we have NO breeding incentive scheme compared to multi million dollar schemes for red hots and thoroughbreds, while now pink cards cost $250,naming costs doubled and stupid restrictions put on bitchs to restrict breeding. NO restrictions on the other codes.Greyhounds Australia and Animals Australia are peas in a pod.

After you take away the ads unnamed giveaways there would be lucky to be 20 genuine litters for sale in that section

I was talking this morning to someone about the schemes you get when owning a race horse vs dogs.
Take all the Sh&t out of it and get down to the nuts and bolts of it all you get a lot more being involved in a racehorse minus the crap + perks and bonuses vs a dog were your getting none of the above BUT the crap gets thrown in for free.
Are greyhounds dieing the slow death with no chance of getting its head back above water?
I'll tell you this though, in all the years I've been involved in the horses even growing up with my parents being involved I've never once had a problem with the stewards but since I got into the dogs they stick to you like sh@t and you feel like the enemy.
We're is this 'group' fighting and changing things at the top?
I've seen a bunch of twats posting garbage on the net thinking there actually achieving something that's about all.
There is a plan playing out to close tracks and narrow the industry to a few small pockets and breeding is down and costs are up.

We have a litter of 11 here 8 weeks old. We haven't advertised them or told anyone they are for sale. But have had a few calls about them.

So may be it's down to supply drying up . I don't know. But obviously people are looking at breedings through fast track etc

As for costs to breed it's been pretty much the same for the last five years here in vic

The variable being the stud fee And we breed and rear our own but that still has a cost lol

COSTS:::::: Where do I start?
In addition to the above, cost of purchase of a decent brood $ (not disclosed)
Registration of an untried freshman stud dog via GA $2,000
+ DNA, transfers, registrations. $400
Rearing (as I have limited space / kennels / permit for excess dogs) $320 per week.
Travel, of at minimum 800km per week to trial / gallop.
Trial costs, worming, flea treatment, kennel repairs and sundries.
Keeping for retired greys (something not many take into account, but the norm these days)
Vets fees. (Including season suppression for any bitches)
Sundries such as vet wrap, rub down gel, innovative machinery, hidro bath, electro magnetic therapy, ultra sound, massage, muscle man, toll costs, feeding the trainer on trips. The list is endless
ALL ADDS UP TO A SH#T LOAD! Per dog before the dog has a race start.
Multiply this by a couple of 7 / 9 dog litters and eating bread and butter and duck under the table isnt so bad!
Just keep fingers crossed there is a city winner amongst them to stay even.

Rich.

Plus the rearing costs of about $50 to $70 per week per pup.

The question was cost of breeding a litter.
So its rego, vet and straw for me because we whelp our own.
Adelaide Plains are about the best there is and $650 covered all tests, insemination and boarding.
Straw can obviously be $500-$5000+

And then Mick Barry, we need to take out wifes salary and international conference attendance fees...

It's one thing to breed a litter, but somewhere further down the track, most if not all, will need rehoming....that in itself is fast becoming a pain in the ass.

Overegulation of the industry doesn't help much, and of course
there's the money wasted on unused Pink cards.

Welcome back, Mini Quinny.
Obviously you found your dummy.
Also quite obvious your head has swollen bigger yet again.
Perhaps with all the prize money you now have you can invest in a mini bus...make sure it has a sunroof big enough to stick your noggen out.
I hear Toyota make one, think its called the deluxe guillotine sunroof.
Ideal.

Jamie I like to attend the conference at shelbourne park each year on the second Saturday in September .

And now with racing in Dubai that makes a nice stop over to study things there lol

IMO no reason at all.

The costs haven't really changed much in the past 3-4 years in Vic any way.

Rearing still the same around $50 paw
Whelping down around $3500
Stud fee average $1600
Implant $6-700

Every other costs are roughly the same as they were 3-4 years ago.

The only additional cost I can think of is Pink Card.

Yes it is very expensive to bred a litter but if your breeding with the right bitch and you sell a couple of pups you won't be that far out of pocket.

With a lot of people doing deals with breeders it can be very beneficial and cost affective for every one.
