We are almost through winter - what are people's view on the effectiveness of the C5 compliance rule.

We are regularly reminded regulation is introduced based on empirical evidence or the advice of experts - so lets get a feel for what empirical evidence at kennel level looks like.

Has it resulted in prevention?

Is it a good initiative?

I think there are about 13 known Canine Flews ...
C5 covers I think 5 off the top of my head ...
If it is the strain they have been Vacc against the symptoms are not as harsh but how do you really know what strain it is not unless you get a blood test and further test to determine what strain it is ..

Honey Glycerine and lemon seems to be one of the better aids to help them get over the cough ....

C5 is not a waist a time and it should be a three year shot ....The PTB will not allow a three year shot ...I wonder why ...

C5 covers Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus and 2 strains of Kennel Cough (Bordatella and Parainfluenza). There are numerous strains of Kennel Cough but they only cover the 2 most common strains in a C5. Bit like human flu vaccines every year - they can't cover all of the strains. Also the 3 yearly vac is only for C3 (Parvovirus, Hepatitis and Distemper). The Kennel Cough vac still has to be given annually. Hope this helps.

I partly agree Ted. We can never get 100%coverage with any vaccinations but when they are vaccinated and still get a dose of it (KC or other diseases like Parvovirus) it is never quite as bad as they have some immunity and seem to fight it off quicker. Two of mine were fully vaccinated and then went off to the breakers and both came home with KC. But it was only a mild infection (one of the other less common strains). I will never "bag" vaccines as I remember the Distemper outbreaks years ago and Parvovirus when it first hit Australia in the late 70's. Don't want to go back to the bad old days!!

The best pup has the virus worse than I have ever had before and the others have had it for over a week don't think it lessened the impact at all Bronwyn.Agree on Parvo but only needed once.

Ted,
Do yourself and your pups a big favour and go and buy yourself some dried PURE echinacea from a produce store. Don't buy a commercial version. Get some TOMORROW.
Put some in a grinder and mix a large pinch in each individual's dinner until well after they get over it.
Just do it and let me know how they are after 3 or 4 days.

Cheers.

Ted, try some Manuka honey, too. It also seems to work well.

Ted, Manuka honey works much better than ordinary honey. Give it a try.

Ted, you can get it at Produce Stores but you might have to ring around to see if they stock it. Horse people have used it for ages. Dried leaf, flowers, stalks.
Out of all the things I've tried this is by far the best.
It is an IMMEDIATE immune booster best used before the KC season, however, it will give your pups a massive boost to fight existing illnesses.
You can use it in conjunction with Carole's suggestion of M/honey if you like.
You cannot underestimate the power of it.

Good luck.
