Although some of these matings may have been "mistakes" some may have been done purely to retain certain bloodlines. The intention would then have been to outcross to similar inbred bloodlines but unrelated to the initial cross.
It happens all the time in the breeding of livestock. I use this method in breeding racing pigeons that are retained as my future stock birds. Once they are outcrossed they produce hybrid vigour.
