PRESIDENT's REPORT ON PARTICIPANT RETURNS THAT GRV DOES NOT WANT YOU TO SEE

GRV has neglected participant returns and infrastructure and spends far more money on internal expenses than it should. It seems unwilling to even consider changing course.

Each month GOTBA Vic provides a short note for inclusion in GRVs Greyhound Monthly. This months report was rejected by GRV, without GRV giving a reason.

I urge you to read the President's Report here - EXTERNAL LINK

In November 2018 we will release a more detailed report on GRV's spending, using its own figures.

Dear Participants
THE GOTBA VIC PRESIDENTS REPORT GRV DOES NOT WANT YOU TO SEE GRV is falling
behind on participant returns and infrastructure
Each month GOTBA Vic provides a short note for inclusion in GRVs Greyhound Monthly. This months
report was rejected by GRV, without reason. That report is on the next page. You be the judge of why
it was rejected.
We will release the more detailed analysis of GRVs inadequate spending on participants and
infrastructure later this month. All of it is drawn from GRVs own reported figures.
Participant share of wagering income has decreased from just under 60% in 2008/09 to 47% in 2016/17
(last available figures) in todays terms that difference is almost $13m in annual prizemoney. GRVs
expenditure on itself, particularly employees, has exploded: GRVs other expenses (excluding
participants returns and infrastructure) has ballooned from $14.6m in 2008/09 to $50.3m in in 2016/17.
You and your greyhounds deserve better. You have borne costs associated with changes to this industry
too. You are not being properly compensated for doing so.
GRV cannot ignore this issue. It now has for far too long and we will not go away. It is an issue for
participants and clubs. Clubs have not adequately participated in income increases. It is time participant
and indeed club voices were properly listened to.
Participants could rightfully ask whether GRV suffers from the same issues as another sporting
organisation whose ethics review very recently stated:
With the exception of own Board and senior executives, the broad consensus amongst
stakeholders is that does not consistently live its values and principles. ... is perceived to say
one thing and do another. The most common description of is as arrogant and controlling.
The core complaint is that the organisation does not respect anyone other than its own. feel
that they are treated as commodities. There is a feeling amongst some [stakeholder]
Associations that they are patronised.

This was sent to me from a Long time Owner Breeder trainer ....I thought i would share ..

GRV's Alan Clayton is the man who keeps GRV running as level playing field... To protect our industry and the integrity of of all participants, management and board members...
Our board at GRV haven't a clue as to what owners, trainers and breeders are doing with the running of their kennels. They have not a clue as to the cost in transporting our dogs to races, how much time we spend diving our dogs to and from races.l would be very surprised if any of them had been to a teir3 meeting... Yet they decide how much we are pair.. IE travel feed prize money etc...
They get their info from the CEO who l doubt has never gone to a teir3 with a dog to kennel and race... Wait till race 12 win and get swabbed. These people are responsible for a level playing field.. But they dont know what WE have to go through to race.. Teir3 racers have the same rights as normal full stakes meeting racers. But we (teir3) are graded as not as worthy as the other dogs.. Not only are they not as worth, these dogs provide 10 times as many Swabs as the none teir3 racers..
So what is the answer... Hmmmm... Good question... My view is teir3 races and half price meeting should end immediately... And teir3 should race like the other dogs as full stake meeting...

Stop the class distinction...
So when racing at teir3 you risk a positive swab, and result being you are treated like a city winner and disq and fined as such.. Is this a level playing field, l think not..
As footnote... I have only ever seen our "board members" at city group one finals, having a free nite on our food and wine, they like the back slappers and running shoulders with the Pollies and the elite people in our industry..
Im thinking its about time they considered everybody in greyhounds..
Next l would like to talk about mr Claytons pay packet.... Much larger than past CEO's who actually did know something about greyhounds and racing.. Check annual figures for GRV and his salary will be there..

Now if you want things to change for the better and maybe keep racing going in victoria, l suggest you get along to gobta annual general meeting at sandown, and get as many people to join as possible.. The only way GRV will listen ,has to come from gobta...

The more members the chance of things to happen... Ask yourself this question, what can l DO to help keep greyhound racing... Im Wondering if it will same answer.... Gobta is nothing... BUT its all we have.. Numbers id strength

Kevin,

It has been good to see Vic GOTBA taking GRV to task on the expense ratio one that will be paralleled in some other states, particularly NSW. They will get a response if any that staff and cost increases were forced on them by Inquiries and Ministerial outcomes re Tooradin, etc.

But this avoids the real points.

1. GRV is a bureaucracy. As such it invariably reacts to a problem by coming up with the solution that it needs more staff, more expenses and more regulations. Further, government said another department is needed to do a bigger job over supervising kennels etc when GRV already had the same responsibility. Thats inefficient duplication.
2. GRV then said the pet departments report was fine and dandy ie as one bureaucracy to another. That justifies the expense?
3. There are no real controls over what GRV (or any authority) spends. They do not have to justify it to anyone. They just spend until they run out of ink and then give whats left to owners and trainers. This is what bureaucracies do.
4. GRVs income rise is not natural but has come about over years from changes to commission splits, government grants and by running more races. Nice but hardly a commercial outcome.
5. GRV said overbreeding was a real issue, then changed its mind, then cut back some breeding fees and is now looking at a stack of empty boxes and reduced race numbers, all of which discourages betting. Nothing was solved.
6. The more staff a bureaucracy has the more the boss gets paid.

In total, this amounts to commercial incompetence, but it is typical of the cost-plus budgetting of government instrumentalities such as GRV. They should never be put in charge of business enterprises, nor should the government poke its nose in they never do any good trying to pick winners.

The only decent answer is to demolish these authorities and replace them with business-oriented structures and staff, charged with making profits and paying dividends.

Kevin,

Your quote was twofold also addressing Tier3 and the like.

The suggestion was to raise the level of T3 prizes and so on. That denies the basic aim of competitive sport, which is to achieve excellence while keeping an eye on developments at all levels in the community. In effect, it proposes putting park footie matches on at the MCG and hoping someone will turn up. Bad idea. Bad products.

The way to achieve better returns for participants is to make the pie bigger and better, not to drag it all down to a crappy level. If you want more sales, you must convince the customers first. If they buy then there is more to distribute to all the people who put the game together. The reverse order never works.

You might well make a comparison with AFLW. In time, it will fade into the background, supported only by HABS (the opposite of WAGS) because the product is terrible. It is being, and will be, subsidised by the men and subsidies are never a good way to go. Its presence on prime time FTA TV serves only to degrade the whole AFL concept. No problem with some background support but sight unseen please.

(I have no problem with female tennis, basketball, rugby, league or soccer but AFLW demonstrates that women do not have the special capabilities that the sport demands, physiologically speaking. At cricket, batting and fielding is fine but bowling is awful for much the same reason).

Bruce ..
I am all about racing Greyhounds regardless of what amount of money they race for i am all for supporting the little people of the Industry because lets face it the industry was based on a Amateur sport

We don't need big $$ racing because most times it serves no purpose for the rest of the 90% of the Industry ...

We need the smaller breeders to start breeding again but they need a guarantee that there dogs will be able to get some GAP places after they finish racing and i feel we need to reward the breeders in each state with GUARANTEED PLACEMENT in GAP ..

This will encourage a lot more breeders to breed

Bruce the Greyhound product has grown so the Mugs out there seem to love the fact no one is on their backs WHIPPING them over the line and no one makes them chase the lure and that is why our product will always grow regardless if it's tier 3 racing or not just look at the pools it tells its own tail ..

Make more racers for more dogs ..

Have a look at the Noms for Tied racing in Victoria Bruce and then tell me there is no need for tier 3 racing it makes no sense if we cannot race almost every dog we breed its the only way SUPPORT the INDUSTRY from the GRASS ROOTS again ..

These lower tiers are used by all of the TRAINERS today PRO and Amuetuer ...
