How has it come to this?
Always loved racing my dogs in Drumbo Park.
Southern tracks have taken up Bags contracts, why has this not been the case for the only track with the UK in Ireland?

Unbelievable. Always seemed a decent crowed of punters and people out for the night. Very sad day.

EXTERNAL LINK
Devastating news. I really hope that funding comes forward to support the ongoing running of the track.

Really feel for all the folk who are directly affected by this.

Do not know much about the running of a greyhound track but a possible idea would be for a track to open in the North whose main day was Saturday afternoon.
Just imagine the T V cameras could show the days racing just like a bookies shop and possibly sell alcohol as well maybe you could have an out of town market if it was out of town on a Sunday in the middle of the track these are just ideas possibly stupid ones?

DEVESTATED TO GET THE SAD NEWS ABOUT DRUMBO THIS MORNING, MY PHONE HASNT STOPPED FROM GREYHOUND OWNERS BOTH NORTH AND SOUTH, I DONT KNOW WHAT MORE THE OWNERS AND TRAINERS THAT SUPPORTED DRUMBO COULD HAVE DONE OR FOR THAT MATTER WHAT THE OWNERS OF DRUMBO COULD HAVE DONE TO KEEP THE TRACK OPEN, THE ATMOSPHERE AND THE WELCOME WAS SECOND TO NONE, THE FACILITIES AT DRUMBO CAN NOT BE BETTERED ANYWHERE, THE TOTE TURNOVER AT DRUMBO WAS SECOND ONLY TO SHELBOURNE. SO HOW CAN IT HAVE FAILED ? I PERSONALLY BLAME IGB AND STORMONT IN WHATEVER ORDER YOU PREFARE.

TONY IF THE IGB FUNDED THE NORTHERN TRACKS THEY COULD RUN AT THE SAME LEVEL AS THE SOUTHERN TRACKS AND ATTRACT RUNNERS WHICH INCREASES RACES AND THE TOTE MONEY GOES UP MEANING MORE MONEY FOR THE TRACK, ON AN AVERAGE 10 RACE CARD DRUMBO HAVE TO PAY ROUGHLY 110 PER RACE, THATS 1100 BEFORE THEY SWITCH A LIGHT ON. IGB FUNDING IS ESSENTIAL FOR NORTHERN TRACKS TO SURVIVE. IGB ARE GETTING ABOUT 16 MILLION PER YEAR TO HELP GREYHOUND RACING IN IRELAND, 100K A YEAR WOULD HAVE HELPED US SURVIVE, AND YES TONY WE SPOKE TO THE IGB REGARDING FUNDING AND WERE TOLD NO.

A dark day for Northern Ireland in regards to greyhound racing , been attending drumbo since it opened and the old Ballyskeagh before that. Some great nights had in the place and I for one will be sad to see it closed. Will miss the craic and the characters it had. Not to be too patronising but I Think the track owners could have been more courteous to tell the owners and trainers who supported it that this was a very possible outcome in the new year,After all without the support of these owners and trainers drumbo would never have opened in the 1st place. But business is business and if it isnt viable then who can blame them. They are not doggy people , they are business men and making money is the name of the game. Perhaps a solution will come to fruition in the near future as regards to it opening again.

This is very sad news.

Funds are still available in the Greyhound-Data Irish Fighting fund to help owners, trainers, staff or the track if they find themselves in financial difficulty due to the track closing.

If you need assistance please do not hesitate in emailing me direct [email protected] All correspondence will be kept confidential.

I am sorry for all concerned.

Gutted for all the people who made such an effort to support the track specially yourself Click and the committee , you deserved better . The owner didn't handle it very well and if business is business as one other post pointed out then the main responsibility lies with him . Don't forget the local council who put the Sunday meetings out of bounds and as far as Stormount is concerned the less said the better , they were asked some years ago to help and it fell on deaf ears .Regarding the IGB ,they did offer a substantial some of money some time ago and it fell by the wayside because agreement could not be reached as to who controlled it .It must also be remembered that the IGB is funded by the Irish tax payer however a legimate point could be made on the grounds that we pay a considerable amount in terms of fees and fines and perhaps the IGB could be approached for help and or advice ,I'm sure they would be sympathetic, doggy men are doggy men North and South .

Hi Gerry,

This statement on Talking Dogs makes it clear that Drumbo is seen to be outside the IGB remit. I believe the offer youre referring too from some years ago was from the ICC?

IGB STATEMENT ON CLOSURE OF DRUMBO PARK
IGB

The IGB notes today's news that Drumbo Park Greyhound Stadium is to close with immediate effect.

IGB CEO Gerard Dollard commented today: "Drumbo Park falls outside the remit of the Irish Greyhound Board but we would be very aware of the excellent work done by all those at the track as part of the wider greyhound industry. The IGB is also very aware of the strong financial support Drumbo Park has received from its owners since its opening ten years ago.

There is a strong greyhound racing tradition in Northern Ireland, with many people directly and indirectly economically benefitting from the industry. It is sad to see the tracks closure in this way and the impact on both full and part time staff at the track, as well as the wider greyhound community."

The Irish coursing club, hasn't said much, they have took thousands of pound from greyhound folk in the North for years, naming, change of ownership, the ridiculous amount of money, it costs to look at coursing results, the list goes on,what have they ever done for us, as far as I can see, nothing but take, I will probably give them up, the only good thing is the coursing club, will be getting less money, sorry for sounding so bitter but they have contributed nothing to drumbo
