Australia is literally burning and now tens of thousands are being affected across the country, some Greyhound folk as well.

It's become a disaster and there are people and their children out there left with nothing but the shirt on their back.

It's fast becoming the blackest event in Australian history, if not already and the is more devastation to come.

Is it possible that the whole Australian Greyhound racing industry come together and help them?
I'm talking individuals, clubs, and state authorities.

Can we get a fund/auction happening and canvass everyone and every club and every state authority to COME TOGETHER AND HELP!?!?

Sometimes the misfortune of others make us realize how lucky we are.
There are a lot of unlucky people out there ATM who are hurting badly.

Maybe we could all just give a thought to how bad it would be to go through what they have...and give a little?

I agree that Greyhound folk should be the first beneficiaries, for sure.
I'd also like to think if the WHOLE industry got behind something like this there would be extra funds to help the wider community too.
It certainly wouldn't hurt the industry's image, on the contrary, it would show the humanitarian side to many.

Yes, many dog people aren't cashed up, me included, but more than happy to give what I can.
Anything that could help people that have been affected would be a Godsend.

I wrote this thread because I really feel for these people and I'm happy to get my hands dirty.
To be honest, I've got no bloody idea how to transfer the idea into reality so I can't do it on my own.
I'd need PLENTY of help with building the structure.

As far as canvassing donors I have already started.
My local club, Ipswich are putting my proposal to their committee, so it's a positive step.
I'll be making a call to my good friend Luke from the Brizzy club with the same proposal.
We need one or two pledges from clubs and it should start the ball rolling.
Anywhere from $2,000-5,000 from decent sized clubs shouldn't be too big an ask.
Smaller cash strapped club can still donate a 50 trials ticket to be auctioned.
Every club can give something.

I'll also be giving Racing Queensland a call but that's probably hoping against hope...you never know.
What I'd like to see is "Fire Appeal" on the name of races broadcast from every state. How we get the PTB involved I don't know.

All just ideas floating around in my head but it's a cause of Aussies helping Aussies and no-one should be shying away from helping in a small way, PTB included.
I keep thinking about how I'd feel if I lost my dogs and property to fire and I cringe every time.
I probably wouldn't feel because I'd go down with them.

I'm up for the challenge but there needs to be a core group who have a bit more idea on how to execute than me.

I'll PM you Rich if this get a foot hold and we'll have a chat.

What might be a better idea is that races are named FIRE APPEAL 5th/B8 etc with $50 less to the winner, matched by Grnsw so EVER race is $100 to the appeal.

Greyhound Racing Victoria will donate $250 to the bushfire appeal every time a greyhound wins a race from the red box at any Victorian track during the month of January.

GRV Board Chair Peita Duncan, along with the Chair of Greyhound Clubs Victoria, Adrian Scott, said GRV, the 13 Victorian clubs and participants had a proud history of banding together to help those in need and the Red Dog initiative was just one way we could all show our support to the thousands of Victorians going through tough times.

We will also be naming a race at every meeting in honour of our brave emergency services personnel who, day after day, are putting themselves on the line to fight these horrendous fires, Ms Duncan said.

Our hearts go out to all those affected and I will be cheering the red dog all through January and hope we can raise tens of thousands of dollars for fire affected communities.

In addition to the Red Dog appeal I know most, if not all, of our clubs will be holding their own separate fundraisers.

Ms Duncan said Warragul had plans for a fundraiser at its Cup meeting next week and Sale also planned to raise funds at its Australia day meeting.

So, cheer on the Red Dog in January and get along to your local greyhound racing club to support this important initiative for the Victorian community.

With 17 dogs winning from the red box in the first four days of January the Red Dog appeal is off to a flying start with $4250 already in the bushfire appeal.

That's absolutely brilliant, Michael.
The degree of devastation is incomprehensible.
There are things going on behind the scenes with this appeal that will be explained soon.

The volume of support and donations from Australians to the ones affected is overwhelming.

At this time it is unclear how many people with Greyhounds are in trouble.

Once the picture becomes clearer, we are going to help them.
