Im looking for some information from someone with scientific knowledge to assist my research into Procaine in greyhounds.
You'll be struggling to find that person on here.

If there's a website called dental data that would be the way to go.

Thanks - have there been any recorded positives in Ireland, UK, Australia or America in greyhounds containing Procaine and any how it could get into the greyhounds system?

In Australia almost all positive cases have come from the food chain
Downers that have been given Procaine into the teat for mastitis and other related dairy cow problems . The cow dies and we end up with contaminated meat
30 odd years ago we used to be able to use Procaine for sand toe sand burn. Procaine is now able to be detected at a very low reading ..One eye drop in a swimming pool can be detected and will come up as a positive swab there is no set limit or range Stay away from Knackery meat use human grade only at all times or you risk a positive for a range of things today I hope that helps

Thanks Kevin, would you say Procaine works as an enhancer if found in the system or a stopper?
Also if the meat is of good quality grade and cooked thoroughly could the Procaine still be present?

the only plausible use might be as muscle injury topical application similar to 4% lidocaine patches it will show up in after race testing 40 years ago many owners were cited for its illegal use

Procain levels in meat are so low that it has no effect on any greyhounds IMO ....
Greyhound testing can detect very small amounts into the parts per millions.
Cooking of Meat will kill any trace of procain but i would not risk it for race dogs use it on pups broodies retired hounds ..

Even if its totally out of your control and your buying top of the range meat from a reliable source and cooking it thoroughly?

21-30 days is the official and generally recognised withholding for Procaine in human consumption beef and longer tolerance for milk (dairy) cows, the advice is don't use on lactating cows.
Yes there are examples of human consumption beef having procaine if you live in Cameroon for example. So everyone is correct and take what you will from all this factually accurate information. ;)
Confusing isn't it?
I'll try to make it heaps easier -- all these are banned substances if you present them to race and it is detected yet all of them are also therapeutic agents and totally alright outside of competition - put them in your treatment record if administering -- and acknowledge withholding times per vet advice.

Laboratory tests have been greatly improved. I have been told Greyhounds Australasia may put out an updated list of withholding times. I believe drugs like carprofen, Meloxicam, dexamethasone may be picked up for much longer. Err on the safe side.
