Interestingly. from those GA stats, the number of litters born in 2014 of 3364 was the highest since 2007 which had 3373

The period between 2008 and 2013 was a period of decline in litters born

2015 will obviously be a poor year but the number of litters increasing in 2014 was indicative of the popularity of the sport

If it can be handled and marketed well by our powers that be, during this dark time, there is no reason why this sport cannot take off again and the enjoyment that we once had can be regained by all participants, not just the big breeders and kennels

The main issue will always be welfare and what happens to the dogs before, during and after racing

If this can be managed well, then the sport has a terrific chance of recoupment of lost ground

Jan 2014 400 matings . Jan 2015 358 matings = down 42
Feb 2014 296 matings Feb 2015 264 matings = down 32
Mar 2014 272 matings Mar 2015 204 matings = down 68
Apr 2014 186 matings Apr 2015 154 matings = down 32
May 2014 229 matings .. May 2015 105 matings = down 124
June 2014 190 matings .. June 2015 104 matings = down 86
July 2014 218 matings .. July 2015 116 matings = down 102

These (national) figures are not 100% accurate as there will be a few services added to June and Julys numbers due to the states lag times but they are not far off and certainly are fairly accurate up until the end of May but regardless, as things currently stand to the end of July, service numbers for this year are down 486 when compared to 2014

The biggest drop off has occurred in the last 3 months and if it keeps going at that same rate .. we will end up down around 1000 services which will translate to around 800/900 less litters, at a guess

The interesting point is that GRV currently has only 46 matings listed for August ... of course that will update considerably but there were 254 matings last year so I can't see it getting anywhere near that ... my guess is just over 100 ... maybe 120 to 150 which will mean another big drop off ... I think August will tell the tale

I haven't had time to review the GA site fully but I didn't notice something

Look at nsw 2013 vs 2014 and look at races held vs no of starters ? Is this correct?

So why aren't people breeding? Aren't we the ones that control the destiny of the industry?

At least next years stud-book should be published on time as it'll only contain 50 pages lol.

Seriously thou....Has anyone received this years (which REAL is last years) book yet. I'm on the mailing list but haven't heard anything since I last made contact with GA around 6 weeks ago.....where I was told they will be publishing it & I'll be notified by email.

yes steve, so far in sept only 42 registered services and I estimated 218

Services for 2015 calender year could be down by upto 56% based on my worse case scenario

still like to see end oct numbers

I've got some tables that suggest an average of 9.5% of services miss Anthony, but in recent times most studmasters & Vets have since had massive advances in technology through blood progesterone testing & A.I. as you'd know.

I'd say 8% of misses would be a more acceptable level...give and take a point here & there.

I'd personally be surprised if conception rate was as high as 95.5% overall.I'd have thought 90-92%.

Average litter size I think is generally around 6-6.2 pups.

The average litter size (by my records in Australia) over the last 25 years for SIRES that have produced more than 20 litters is 6.28 pups.

well take 10% of my numbers to get whelpes with pups and i used 6.5 pups per litter, so if you use 6-6.2 the numbers will be far worse
