Charles,
Sorry, I did not keep a copy of it but it was in the midst of all the kerfuffle about NSW bans. It is not something you would make up.

No, "punters" do not bet on two flies - gamblers do and they are what the code is relying on more and more every year.
Why so? Because all the state authorities have failed to market sufficiently the worth of the breed and to design more reliable, consistent tracks. Hence the heavy overbetting on favourites by mugs and the disappearance of genuine punters over the last several years.

Bruce the punters are disappearing because the corporate bookmakers wont let them on for any amount at all. 20 years ago when bookmakers were on track there was minimum bet limits that applied for all. Now that they aren't on track there are no minimum bet limits, hence they cant get set unless they bet into a Tote pool that is holding $300 one minute out from the jump.

Brett,
Very true. A partial solution is to support the ACCC and others in allowing the merger of TABCORP and Tatts, thereby producing larger pools.

Another is to write to your state member demanding that they impose the same rules on corporates as apply to oncourse bookies and the tote. In turn they can then put pressure on the NT to do the same. Remember also the NT is "owned" by the Commonwealth.

A third is to demand that state racing authorities charge (taxes) on corporates at the same rate applying to the tote and oncourse bookies.

Lots of legal/political problems but it can be done.

None of which should be taken to lessen the need for more professional marketing of the code, or to improve track layouts and reduce interference. For which we need managers, not bureaucrats.
