Firstly Ray, bi carb is not harmful,(Des Fegan vet) Sensational yes. In the dictionary the word DOPING relates to DRUGS so..........the last 3 substances that they have fantasized about, namely..... Cobalt is a TRACE ELEMENT. Arsenic is a CHEMICAL ELEMENT Bi Carb is a CHEMICAL COMPOUND In Cobalt and Arsenic you have ORGANIC AND INORGANIC CLASS. Organic Cobalt, any of the B group vitamins. Obviously this aids animal welfare. Inorganic Cobalt, Cobalt Chloride, which was at the centre of the Cobalt Affair. This Cobalt is a serious welfare issue with major testing proving that you can kill an animal using it. Arsenic is a chemical element found in water, air, food and soil as a naturally occurring substance or due to contamination from human activity. Arsenic occurs in organic and inorganic forms. The organic forms are of relatively low toxicity while the inorganic forms present a greater hazard. Organic Arsenic found in seafood, seaweed, vegetables, Chicken the list goes on and on. Bi Carb is SODIUM Based, in other words SALT. When bi carb is used it makes the blood more alkaline so becomes a blocker for Lactic Acid and helps the animal, horse or dog repels signs of acidosis which relates to kidney damage so this becomes a welfare issue. Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story or industry bombshell, this has been happening to much now and the media have become addicted to it. So Leaked info hits the newspaper. RVL have a huge problem here, they still do not know who leaked the Cobalt info. The Racing Minister comes out yesterday with how disappointed he is, guess what minister the buck stops with you, you created this new board. The Chair, the CEO, the Chief Vet and the top integrity guy are gone. The top integrity guy Dayle Brown is now 2 I C for GRNSW, bit of drop down the ladder I would have thought. Brown quits as RV head of integrity | RACING.COM this guy was reported to be the mastermind of the cobalt crap. EXTERNAL LINK Milkshakes(Vitamins and electrolytes) or Bi Carb is not banned in horse racing. They have a threshold for Bi Carb at 36. So, the way I see the rules they have broken one rule and that is NO RACE DAY TREATMENT Nowhere have I heard or read that the threshold was broken, how can that be if and has been given on race day at the track and the charges go back 8 odd years, what the bloody hell were the stewards doing in that time. Integrity and Welfare are the new catch crys and yes they are both very important but as far as I am concerned it has been used to bully and intimidate participants in all codes. So what is raceday treatment worth penalty wise? Who knows. Lets see how much money the blow on this one, close to 10 million for the cobalt case and I can tell you the positive readings they got would easily come from VAM or Hemo Plex vitamins to aid recovery, so once again a welfare issue. I remember a GRV Chief Steward say in an Appeal hearing once, "If you uphold this appeal you will be opening a Pandora's Box" Well the Pandora's Box is well and truly open and damage will be done. One thing though, people who keep our industries going will not stop have a bet, they never have and never will.
