Hi everyone
Looking for some advice/help on what to look for when choosing a sire please. Novice to the breeding side of the game and wanting to try and learn what to look for when choosing a sire and why that particular one. All the numbers and percentages at the bottom of testmatings mean nothing to me at the minute.
I know its not an exact science but Im trying to think ahead for the end of our bitches racing days and to be as prepared as possible when the time comes.
Named NAH THEN BELLA Shes a decent size at 30kg, has a relaxed friendly temperament and from a very good litter so hoping she should throw something decent as a brood too.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer

This site has a wealth of info on it and I can assure you that if you want a few hours, days or even months of reading the information is here. Just type in some relevant search terms, for example 'breeding' and that will start you off - good luck !

One of the best things you can do is look at her littermates and if they have bred, her mothers litters and how they performed and even go back to her grandmother and see what she threw well too.
From there you should be able to pick up some common bloodlines that have clicked well with the line and from there you can look at what sires are available and consider them as potential options.

When breeding you can go 2 ways , Line breeding which is replicate past lines in her breeding that has produced top class performers or outcross her and put some new blood into her
Neither is more proven the other , they both work as your Bitch has proven this with her own breeding having an outcross with Kinloch Brae
Having said that I would line breed her more as she is faultless in breeding to arrive where she is now , she is a good bitch
So duplicate her past I say , only my opinion but , heres what it looks like
Gives four lines of Blonde Slippy but in 5th and 6th generations, so not too close up.

Yes he really has come on. Top performer.
Hopefully everything goes well with your bitch and you end up using him.
Food for thought here, just playing around with pedigrees! But his sister, Ballymac Arminta is some racer too.
If she produces a dog good enough to go to stud, then you could put a bitch from your mating to him.
PS I have just put in my favourite Aus dog in the mix, Hooked on Scotch, and if I was lucky enough to own Ballymac Arminta, I would be getting hold of his semen for sure !!

Without being cruel Peter, Alfonse doesn't really have the profile of a successful stud dog. I may be wrong, I hope I am.

Many dogs who have the "profile" as you put it, are no good at stud. Is it always the best bitch from a litter that produces the best offspring ? The planned litter would be to breed on the family of both parents not try to breed to reproduce the father, so do you think it would make any difference to the resulting offspring, if the father was 5 lengths slower than his full brother ?

The slower dog COULD be the better dog, but was unable to prove it on the track due to injury.

Many dogs should not have been used at stud if track ability was the only criteria, Top Honcho, Zero Ten, Pacific Mile ect.... the list goes on. Perhaps the breeding of the dog and the bitches he gets is a bigger influence on success than the dog himself. Would a brother of a top stud have produced as well if given the same bitches ?
