Sire Temperament, do breeders look at the temperament of sires, in order to deliver pups of sound temperament, or do you base your sire choice completely on delivering the fastest offspring? Opinions please!

No replies to this thread which is a surprise to me. I am very interested in finding out more about temperament and have the impression that the American sires throw a sensible type of pup. Obviously the bitch has a big input as well but would like peoples thoughts as to whether American sires would throw a calmer trait into a line.

Temperament is everything without it you don't get good dogs and bitches to race .
There is no difference between Countries all Greyhounds and Sire's carry traits some good some bad ..
The US dog used to be known for strength but today the US sires are not worth twoBob .
The fastest speed dogs reside in Australia ....

Don't mean to upset anyone but if SH Avatar is their best sire, I would say they are 20 years and 10 lengths behind Australia

temp is important in a sire as this trait generally gets thrown into the pups. Also size from the sire happens a lot. the best sires have a great temp. i still think the girl has more input to the pups than anything. i see a lot of different sires through my breaking in track.

Thanks Chris for bringing this thread back to life. Irish users don't seem to want to engage any more which is a pity. The Aussies are the only ones active on the forum of late and fair play to them. I suppose breeding for temperament is something that breeders who are not dependent on selling pups on or breeders who plan to keep the entire litter can experiment with. I understand speed is the first concern, but if they have temperament faults they might not be able to perform to the best of their ability. I was just asking is temperament a big consideration when breeding or is it a case you breed for speed and hope they have the right temperament.

Think u might be a bit off the mark with Sh Avatar mate. He has thrown some great dogs from very limited matings in Australia. Put some of our good dogs to shame in the breeding barn from probably half as many servings. 25% metro winners to starters to start 2020 also

I have to agree, SH Avatar is throwing pups with good running ability and great temperaments. But unfortunately like a few highly wrapped Aussie sires lately producing a fair share with iffy chase

I think Temperament in a new season sire is really important and i always try to do my research on the dogs traits . I have to Agree with above comments , I just used Sh Avatar and i think its perfect timing With King Crato's and Tennesse tiger both qualifying for Derby. Tiger was reared at Peter Sims when i worked there and he was the nicest keenest dogs ive seen .

Sh Avatars won 2 of the 3 Richmond Derby Heats tonight. One of which is King Cratos which would be up there one of the best dogs in Australia by winning the Paws of Thunder and running 2nd to Whiskey Riot in the Temlee.

Interesting, The last time I did the ICW stats for pups born SH Avatar was right at the pointy end, one of the best starts to a career Ive seen This was of limited runners but still impressive Only thing Id say is they lack genuine early pace but strong

I wouldnt look much into temperament being honest. I think the two most important factors for me would be how genuine are the sires pups and also his strike rate to winners. After that it would be the likes of temperament and what average distance they win at.

If my old memory serves me. PAW posted sometime back 1 USA greyhound is the best race dog. 2. Aussie 3. Irish 2 Sire temperament is crucial. ( PAW ) Do not breed two negative traits. Bad travellers, hypo kennel dog, barkers, hard to handle etc. if sire and dam have same negative trait then highly probable pups will have same trait.

GM Very true but with such a small Gene pool now racing in the USA the quality has sharply dropped off IMO ...it had too I was a huge believer a few years ago that the USA were better race dogs tougher stronger more resilient and most had fantastic temperaments now i have changed my mind . Very few people are breeding in the USA compared to 5 years ago and with the number one track Southland shortly closing i feel we are scraping the bottom of the barrel compared the huge range of bloodlines we now have in Australia .. We got the very best Sire's from the USA 5 years ago .
Tasmania and South Aust have a faster gene pool than most USA tracks have at present

Hi Kevin Yes your bang on regarding the USA gene pool, yes USA lost tempo big time. Best Irish sires have Australian bloodlines. Aussie breeders not keen for Irish. Premier Fantasy was the last UK sire that had impact here down under.
