Daniel this I pray will end sooner than latter but the prices now are very inflated
If breeders hold on to pups and have to have reared elsewhere the costs explode I can talk out of experience.Maybe breeders now instead of a fire sale later have to be a little bit more realistic, the economic times ,people loosing jobs ,this bloody virus.
I will breed again but on here you never get the price you want.instead of people clearing a 80% profit ,they may need to look somewhere between 45 - 60 % profitJust because you breed a litter does not give anyone the right to think they can print money from it.Does the greyhound papers still have pups for sale in there classifieds . Michael

looking at page 1 here pups for sale , 10 lots

average price about $4500, if you can breed to a commercial sire .

and sell at these prices i dont think you are making much money

if you average the stud fee its about $5000 on this page

back in the day a greyhound was broken-in in a different way and in today's enviroment a lot of girls would not have made it to the track.
In useing a brood girl you now must look for a performed girl with a good race record to get the chase.

cost reflect the quality of the breeding.

and if you pay a whelper say $5.000 that poor person works for around $55.00 per day for the twelve or so weeks , feeds the pups feeds the mum , probably has sleepless nights vet visits etc ,

just image the cost if you had to pay this person a commercial rate of pay ?

i believe a kid at mc donalds gets around 15/18 dollars an hour plus shift allowance

the more you look into it , the cheaper the pups look

I just posted a litter last night on here for $4500 each. 2 were sold before they were born and i just took another deposit on a bitch 30mins ago.
If i was looking like getting stuck with them i would much rather look for rearing deals then sell them well below what i think theyre worth.
If i could afford to keep them all i would.

and on an ordinary Saturday night at the meadows there is about $100.000 in prize money to be won , so your 10/12 grand pup dosent have to win many races for you to be in profit , lollllllllllllll,

and if you start will CLASS chances are you will get CLASS ,

starting with well bred pups from a mum thats a good city winner /plus her mum should be a city winner or a proven producer should give you the best chance to claiming some of that 100 grand

mind you winners can come from any breeding, but its best to try put the odds in your favor

In your eyes Michael, what equates as an "Ordinary Bitch".

Examples only.

1. A bitch that hasn't won a race who is by a bitch that hasn't won a race?
or
2. A bitch that was unraced by a bitch that was unraced?
or
3. Maybe a mixture of both?

Yes Mick, had half a dose ,and went 50% with Sandro in one of his Bewildering pups
For $1100 ,a great buy .and now a great new partnership..not the end of the world if it doesnt get to the trackIMHO a great move.No more 4/7 k pups for me .I think the market will be depressed for a couple of years into the future.
Cheers jack.

Mate , I grew up with Italians.and have a lot of friends in low places.lol
I think this could be the way to go till things sort its self out Breeder 50% find a. partner at least the breeder will get some money and retains 50% of his/her pup.
In todays climate we have to think differently or disappear.
Cheers jack.

R Conway your 2 posts spot on and balanced and I agree.

M Barry re 2011 old post ( G Barnsley page 3) probably has pups at $4,0000/$4,500 if you go by his example/model.
Early 1980's he bought pups for $1,000 & they raced for $1,200 win in town Sandown
2011 pups $3,500 .....City win $4,000
2020 pups $4,000/$4,500....on City Win $5,300

M Barry I also liked your page 1 comment from 2011 re purchasing/breeding, rearing, then training. Everything you must get right as most breeding now is all good .....its then up to genetics.

Happy to have Jack involved and to partner up with Warren & Sonia Kempshall up in Grafton who will look after the pup through its rearing to race career

One thing, in this topic, talking about the quality of the dam, the mother, Rockhill Kate, was a super keen bitch with a lot of talent but dropped her back muscle after her 6th start which she won at Bathurst in a fast 30.11 at her first ever 500m run

I didn't own her but was fortunate to see a bit of her in her early development as a race dog.

Needless to say when the offer came to lease her, I took the owner up on his offer, even though on paper she looks a bit light on, hence well priced

Let's hope she can transfer her keenness and ability to her pups

Here you go...didn't take long.
I dare say the first of many along with pup prices.

Let's hope the ptb see this as a real problem and start to put strategic initiatives in place now before the hole deepens.
