I have a bitch who almost collapsed after a recent win. She has shown some signs of this up my straight after returning from a break. She passed a a stewards trial last week and no sign of the staggers. Had a run up the straight today and there it was again. Fitness is not the issue. Anyone else had this issue and what might be missing in the system. She is highly competitive and really does give her all.

Hi Ron, have you had any blood tests taken? Could be a good starting point.

Hi Ron,
It sounds like Hypoxia.
I had a dog with it once...sometimes he'd stagger and high step, sometimes he didn't.
Tried many things but not successful.
You may find that getting a blood test might help in finding something that's causing it OR help fine tune her to cause less regularity.

If there's nothing in the blood then it is what it is...

Good luck, it's a bugger of a thing.

Simon and John Thanks for that Had blood done not long ago when she returned from a long break. All was good. I think Michael has defined this. I didnt add that she wss high stepping. Not enough oxygen to the brain and others.Always had a suspicion that she holds her breath in some runs and not others. Retirement looms. Wouldnt like to see any harm done. Thanks Michael

Ron, can you find out what the haemoglobin, red blood cell and PCV ( haematocrit ) readings were ? It would be interesting to find out. Thanks
