I agree in part like, another grade or two, but you do sound like a frustrated owner. If those pre-trainers worth their weight in gold are the standard that you are satisfied with and write about, why dont you send your dogs to them? If not why dont you train them yourself?

How long has it been since a greyhound has pulled you around your suburb for half an hour for $7 a day?

Are there diminishing returns to scale with your investment?

Have you written to the CEO or Board about our issues? There are plenty of them. Perhaps, I should do the same.

Mark

Its just a general commentary on what trends I see happening

In NSW prizemoney has escalated but now so have costs, so as long as they keep pace with each other then I have no issue with that

However, its a different issue and a process of trial and error for an owner to find the right rearer and pre trainer and trainer that suits them and their level in the game

Been there done that

Who knows, only have broodies at home right now but semi-retirement beckons and my collars and leads, walking machine, laser and ultrasound may soon get a refresher course

How long has it been since you have trained dogs? I have had a few spells due to other commitments.

In relation to prize money, IMO except for the big races, it has caught up rather than escalated.

Been involved since I was 15 years old, got my trainers licence at 18 years of age and held it until 28 years of age, many years now haven't trained due to business & family commitments, but have been involved in breeding and owning in all that that time so my investment in time and money is fairly significant over a long period of time

Just because I don't train, it doesn't make me ignorant of whats going on in the sport.

Caught up/Escalated - whats the difference, you are using semantics now Mark...either way its gone up to where it should be, with now further room for improvement

You dont have to be so defensive. I had a strong sense that you werent appreciating the trainer because of your current or long involvement in the industry from a breeding perspective. I never stated you cant or dont have a knowledge of the industry, and I dont have to explain to you that all parts of the dogs life are important.

Anyway, its the wrong thread to continue with my views about matters relating to NSW.

You have it wrong Mark and sorry if it came across defensive

I am commenting generally and because I have some experience in the sport I think it creates more awareness of what's required, whether my views are the wrong or right ones for another person

New people to the sport don't have the appreciation that you or I or many other more experienced heads may have and these new investors can just be taken for a ride

I would like to believe this is happening less and less as time moves on

That's why rearing, pre-training, training, vet care and eventually re-homing have to be brought up to high standards otherwise new investors will get disillusioned with the sport

It's GWIC & GRNSW's responsibility to put that framework in place

Personally, I am more than happy with my current situation and the high standard provided, which doesn't come cheap, but its what I want.

Over the years its been a process of trial and error and believing in people who promise the world but deliver an atlas to get my greyhound involvement to this point...outside of doing it all yourself and controlling every part of the process

Imagine of we had a more regulated rearing industry. The overheads would be horrific. Liability insurance alone could add hundreds. If you think $100 is steep, it's scary to think what it could balloon out to.

Whats the price of good quality rearing where the rearers actually are hands on with your pups and have lead broken at 4 month sof age, chasing in small bullrings & behind drag lures at 6 months of age and kennelled a few times before they go for break in, so that the pups who should have a high degree of confidence at that stage, can focus on the break in process that in the past was a strange experience to them
