Can I have your views on the subject of Natural Mating or Artificial Insemination, should I send my Bitch to Ireland or have straw from over here.

Hi Richard,
As the saying goes, you pay your money, you take your choice.
A.I. will usually cost a bit more because of the progesterone testing and the costs involved with the A.I. procedure but Greyhoundsource in Warrington have something like a 97% success rate with endoscopic insemination.
I don't know what the success rate is for natural matings nor how many stud-keepers do progesterone testing to try and be sure that the mating takes place at the optimum time.
I should perhaps say that I have had 2 bitches mated by A.I. this year but this was because I did not want to send either bitch to Ireland with the stress of the longer journey there and back. I am pleased that I used A.I. and would not hesitate to do so again - provided the stud dog that I wanted to use was available at a reasonable fee.

where is over here.???
I prefer natural, after having a bitch done AI, she had a C sect, so when faced with the pups she had no idea what happened or where they came from and attacked one of them, so with natural she'll know what happened.................lol

dogs are not stupid mal they now they are there pups, just some bitches are exactly that. it happens to humans as well. ive had 6 atificials and 3 natural, one of the naturals try to bite one of the pups head of, i reckon t would have eaten it as well if i wasnt there to stop her.

Are you talking about A.I. using fresh semen or F.S.I.?
Whichever, unless the bitch has low fertility I would go for natural if available,A.I. as second choice and F.S.I. as a very last resort.

have never had a problem in using F.S.I
all have been healthy litters and bitches had no problems in whelping
have also had naturals with no problem also
personally dont think it matters what way. whatever is more convenient

your not LISTENING mal, she had a C sect, which means she was out to it, so when she woke up, and had pups in front of her, she's got no idea there hers.!!

you not listening to me mal they can smell there own pups, if anything she should have thanked you for not putting her thru all the pushing. does not matter how it happened it is not normal for any mother to reject her offspring, you even be able to introduce another pup and her take it. if it was just while the anithestic was wary of then thats a different matter.

Malcolm
I agree with you.
Ive had a bitch who had a C section for her first litter..........the vets gave her the pup with no careful introduction and she killed it!.........her next litters were all by natural birth and shes been a perfect mother.

mal....you implyed having ai creates these probs
yvonne.....ive only had 9 bitches in labour, 3 had to be cut with no pup problems, 6 had natural birth with one that was a bad mother. there is no merit to this statement bar the fact she may still be in lala land, or she is a bad mother. why do you think the vet gave the pup to its mother, maybe they were incompetent and had never done this op b4.......but all in all being cut open and ai have nothing in common as far as your bitch having a natural birth

IMHO rejecting a pup has nothing do do with the method of fertilsation....i agree with you there Mal
But when it comes to introducing a bitch to her pups after a C section it all depends on the individual bitches temperament.
Its a shame but dogs arenot humanes.....they do not spend years watching tele.....reading books etc tpo prepare them for life/
If a bitch with a sharp temperament.....that has been tuned in to race and kill .....them misses out on the birth of her own pups and is just presented with that pup when she awakens there is a big danger she will not realise its her own.....or even that its a dog before she turns on it.
Ask any woman who goes through childbirth.........the birth itself has a big bearing on the bond with the child.........all sorts of hormones are released that bring in the mothering instinct.

yvonne women also are known to reject there newborns this is not uncommon in any of the animal world, most animals kill the weak to keep the strong. but i find with greyhounds when they do it once they do it again, there called bad mothers and it aint got anything to do with being knocked out......... oh and mal you obviously are going to learn alot about dogs or head gonna be stuck up your....for the rest of your life. keep breeding and we will talk again in a couple of years.
