sara, who really knows.
there are no 'golden rules' in breeding....theories are always being produced and also blown out of the water.

so many variables to deal with.

myself it never bothered me....in fact i have a COLLISION pup starting his career right now, and he is by an unraced dam...and he moves very well.

so consider the outstanding plusses in the dam, and thoroughly do the homework on the parentage...certain signs will indicate she is worth a go.
look for strength in the dam line firstly.....unbroken producers of city stock all the way through would be a great starting point.
a good dam line will produce city class stock virtually out of every dam from the line that goes to stud....so that is my first viewing.

sire is extremely important...dont just pick the fashionable sire....do the homework and delve again for 'nicks and clicks' of sires that suit the dams lineage...heaps of info on here about that.

and most of all...she must be a good mum...crap broods can destroy the chances of the pups right from day one....a great broody will give them that all important start in life, and believe me, that is the most important time in the breeding cycle.

have fun and dont get dispirited if the positives do not equal the negatives....all that means is you wont waste time and finances.

As long as well bred i love it as u see with most top broods are mostly lightly raced and droopys boys never over race their bitches.

It sure has Sara, and the thing you have to realise is they are bred and designed to run. However i believe racing around a circle and up a straight is not a breed trait and something you instil into your pups so rearing is the key. Quality race stock have eventuated from all types in the breed, there is no rule other than to give them the best opportunity. The geyhound has not changed much in type over the last hundred plus years, in regard to any change incured to the breed from the track, cant see much there either. The right enviroment and education will give best results from any bitch whether unraced, slow, fast or lightly raced.

Bitches are unraced for various reasons. Unraced doesn't mean lack of ability. A good indicator of what they may pass onto their offspring is to look at siblings and close ancestors.

I purchased two un raced bitches over three years ago
A Spiral Nikita Bitch who at last count has left 15 winners out of a litter of 8 including Carlton Hero a Good Grade 5 dog and the exciting Mystic Apple 6 wins from 13 runs

My other bitch Crystal Siyan has left PHILBY currently earnings of $ 53.000 and ran a credable race in a heat of this years Melb Cup , SO NO a bitch who has not raced DOES not mean it wont through VERY VERY good racedogs.

To me its a cop out
Different if you breed a bitch for three or four litters and she leaves nil but other wise WHY NOT .Breeding is not black and white so therefore GOD only knows.

i have bred from unraced bitches with mixed results,

i have bred from race winning bitches with mixed results .
i have an unraced spiral nakita bitch in pup to magambo at the moment,

her sister also unraced, from her one and only pup to race won first up at bendigo a few weeks , is now in season so off the race scene
for a while ,
the mother of the spiral nakita bitches was also unraced, and she threw winners as well,
i might be a little biased but i think spiral nakita bitches could well provide some stars of the future ,
who best to breed them too may be the secret to success, but good hard chasing sires from the brett lee line may be the go ,
mick

and that ,i would say mike, is a good rule to go by.
majority of greyhounds are very well bred....hard to fins one that isnt.

but, providing certain criteria is met, i see no harm in giving a bitch at least one chance....but it has to be treated as though she was a star...top sire/top whelping/top rearing/top feeding...etc; etc; etc;

to many that have proven 'theories' wrong, so i say why not.

i have a WP bitch here with me now....my criteria is she must WIN AT LEAST a couple of races before i would consider....some others will snap her up just to breed with...but thats my criteria.

and let me assure you, she will stay with me until the day she dies....she is my baby and we are great mates.

but i still wouldnt breed with her if she could not pass phase 1.

Good breeding is all well and good when deciding whether to use a bitch as a brood, but I would still like to know she had some sort of talent even if she didn't get to show it.

no doubt paul, no doubt.
most owners are in love with there dogs, which is not a bad thing, but it can cloud proffesional judgement at times.

if they are honest, then the bitch at some stage would have shown something...before the injury, or illness or whatever took its toll.
but then they have the hard task of convincing us, the purchasers of the noted 'in-house' ability, but nothing for the purchaser to hang there coat on.

still like we all know, there really is no golden rule....unless you set your own rules and abide them.

To me, there is no difference in breeding from an unraced bitch to one that has performed. BUT, I would still want to know that the unraced bitch had a motor...as long as you don't kid yourself and try and pretend that your 31 second bitch at Wenty is a 30 second bitch, go for it.

look at 'ruff it'.

CLICK HERE

its interesting because niether his dam subjective lee, nor subjective ever raced. so two unraced dams close up produced 3 track record holders in the one litter.

I dont think the research matters much Sandro. Although everyone will have their opinion on what bitches you should breed with and to a lesser extent the sire. However i think the truth of the matter is the breed will continue to produce fast animals, with many faster then others, because it is in their make-up. You may be putting things in your favour if your bitch has won 10 around Wenty, but then she may produce no different to the unraced brood down the street. That is why i will be putting litter sisters to the same sires for each mating, if one dont produce the desired result, the other may, and theres plenty of plus's in breeding this way. But as to breeding from unraced, they have as much chance to produce as any other.
