I'm personally not too fussed about weights of dogs, but I would like to hear other peoples thoughts on breeding from small bitches (e.g 24-25 kg).

Would a bitches size alter the

a) decision to mate
b) the choice of sire
c) the number of pups she could "safely" carry

???

Where does size rate on your scale of importance when picking a potential brood?

Hi Mark

Personally and from my experience, the size of the bitch definitely matters and will affect the choice of sire, but not if i'll breed with her or not. if she has all the other traits i'm after, i would still breed with her, but ensure i choose a sire with some size.

As an example, a 25kg bitch i raced and breed with, Daintree Puzzle was no superstar, however she could win races from 300-700, was very sound (had 115 starts), had a beautiful temperament, and would chase through a brick wall and was from a very good family. So apart from her size, she had everything i look for in a broodbitch apart from her size so i decided to give her a chance at stud.

On paper, a mating with Fernando Bale looked perfect, however due to his smaller size i chose to go with an unproven sire at the time, Aston Dee Bee who has great size and would provide line breeding back to Solve The Puzzle who was also a big dog.

The result was a very good litter the produced 4 individual city winner and a group 1 finalist, all of whom where a lot bigger their mum.

However she did require an emergency c-section as the pups were to big for her to whelp naturally.

So to answer your questions
Small size wouldn't stop me from breeding with her
The choice of sire is very important with smaller bitches.
They can safely carry pups, whoever if i had a small bitch, i would strongly consider an elective c-section.

And the size of sire is one of at least 7 key things that i look at when choosing
1. Pedigree must work with the broodbitch. Looking for proven knicks.
2. Stud dog must have a strong damline
3. He must be a track record breaker.
4. He needs to have been sound. Ideally 50 starts plus.
5. He must have chase and be from strong chasing families
6. He must be a 500m performer
7. Size of sire.

Hope that helps.

Interesting what people consider a small bitch. Guess its subject, but I always considered under 25kg to be a small bitch.

Also, find it interesting how the owners of champion racebitch Odious (24.5kg), had no problem going to Ungwilla Lad (29.5kg) and produced champion General Jeff.

Again, in Ireland the owners of champion racebitch Cranog Bet (24.5kg) had no problem going to Prairie Flash (29.5kg) to produce star Itsamint and again put her to Monalee Champion (30kg) to produce star Itsachampion (32.5kg).

Weve just purchased a Black Magic Opal (31.5kg) vial for Pennybacker (23kg)

Enough said, there are no rules on breeding. Mother nature will produce anything. i havnt seen a bitch smaller than Darrens bitch penybacker. I Wouldn't mind that litter any day.

Hi Kade,

I am very impressed with the litter and breeding. What ever the science was that you put into the breeding it clearly has worked. Would be interested to know if you have bred any other litters and if you have had similar results.

Thanks for all of the tips and I'm open to any more tips haha Mitch

A lady in qld that has had more success breeding greyhounds than most of us could only dream of , is of the opinion that the smaller broodies make the best broodies. So pencil that in .

Pennybacker has whelped 2 dogs and 2 bitches to Black Magic Opal (31.5kg) and not a runt amongst them. All weighing in at a healthy 560g. So, much for needing a 35kg dog for your small bitch.

Darren, am i wrong in saying Pennybacker was for sale $3,000 as a racing proposition. I seem to remember enquiring, ( looking for racer/ broodie) at the time. Dropped off when i realised her racing weight was around 22k. More fool me. Were you the buyer???

Thanks Matt!

No Russ, I bred and raced Pennybacker. Was keen to breed with her, because of her keenness and chase. She used to charge into the catching pen, even after been knocked out of the race. Plus, her temperament was exceptional. Shes such a lovely natured bitch! Thats something, I look for in all my broods now and theyre all great mothers to their pups!

Was well aware of Odious and General Jeff (mentioned earlier). So, her size never bothered me. Neither did using a smaller sire.

Hi Darren

Its funny all this time and info about Pennybacker always makes me reminisce as when I raced against her once , it was how I won my first race as a trainer ! Lol

She was a kennel change dog from Grafton called Kikem Kreation , strong bitch with a powerful turn off foot when the gap would present itself .

Its also special in other ways also in that my mother watched me for years setting myself up to train dogs and all the effort I did with 2 jobs full time and greys outside of that to make it happen , she would shake her head and think how long is he going to be able keep this up ? Unfortunately she never got to see me get to the track , bless her soul , but in strange and cosmic way , Kikem provided that first ever win at Richmond on the 8th day from box 3 with her time of 31.17 ! Seems like nothing unique to most , but my mother who had passed , birthdate is 08.03.48

If you add her race time up 31.17, being 48 , after the race I knew I had just had a little help from above racing on the 8th from box 3 in a time adding up to 48 !
Special day where Ill never forget my first win , and you never let me forget for more then a week due to all the deserved Penny chatter ! Lol

Ps another cherry on top that day was TAB decided to give me a multiplyer of x 5 when I backed Kikem at 5/1

Ive never seen that again cosmic I think to say the least !
Watch the race Darren , it felt like I won a GRP race , the way she split runners going into the first turn !

Cheers

I remember that race Nathan.

Back when Richhmond had a decent 500m start

Your bitch finished like a train off some nice earlier runs

I backed Pennybacker that day but took the quinella with your bitch, so thanks for that

Nice story as well, sorry to hear that your Mum couldn't see you train your first winner, those are the things that make being in this game special
