I have always used Calci D or Caldogcium.

My issue isn't the quality of these products but the ever growing price, by March this year i will have approx 70 pups on the property and i'm just seeing if their is both a cost effective and quality alternative that i've not heard of.

My Vitamin retailer has suggested "Dolomite" and "Amino Cal plus" as alternatives but the more research i do, the more questions i find myself asking.

Any suggestions would be very much welcome.

Thnx,
Mel

Melissa, we had a dog with a hair line fracture of his hock, and our vet recommended using Calrate 2 x tablets daily duirng the period or repair 6-8 weeks. he has never had a problem since, youch wood..

One of our pups came off the rearing paddock, and had a small stress fracture in his scaffoid, we did the same thing for 4-6 weeks, and so far we've had no problems. Whether it was the tablets, rest or both, I do believe they help.

Hi Mark,

My only concern with that particular product, is that i was told that it lacks a certain vitamin that allows the calcium too properly access the puppies bones (deep into the marrow). Vitamin D and magnesium if i remember correctly. Yet it is a great product for race dogs. I'm not sure what you use it for but i was told from a rapidvite person that the amino cal plus product was designed psecifically for puppies and broods. I will look into it further though, cheers for your help.

Melissa, if you are interested, Jack Ogilvie makes a product called calcium plus, and it has the ingredients you want in it. Have a look at his website.

Don't know who told you that but they are sadly misinformed!!

Action Calphos granules was formulated by the late, great greyhound veterinary specialist Dr. Jim Gannon and has been widely used by the greyhound fraternity for close to 40 years and has always had a good reputation for building good solid bone in pups and racers. I'll back Dr.Gannon's reputation every day of the week against whoever gave you that info at Rapidvite. All Rapidvite did was buy the formula from the previous owner of the product and rebadge the product. You will see on the label the correct dosage from 3 mths to racing.

P.S. Rapidvite also bought the formula for what is still the best Kidney health product on the market Action AKM [Alkalinising Kidney Mixture].....also a Dr. Jim Gannon formula that has also stood the test of time.

In essence all Rapidvite has done is re-badge the products and jack the prices up!!!

Agree with Howard...advice between Jim Gannon and a rep from Rapidvite?

That's like comparing a Maserati to a Gogomobil.

No problem.

As I mentioned, I was put onto this by Alistair Smith at Sandown who is one of the absolute best in the business. I trust his advice completely.

FWIW, I find 10kg lasts me about a month with 25 dogs (pups and racers). That's $1 a week per dog. Not bad really.

All the pups on the property get chicken necks 2-3 times a week as a midday snack, normally frozen and they love it. You see them dive away into a corner and have a good chew lol

Mellissa, and anyone else, interested in this. Save your money, and start putting SEA KELP, on your dogs feed every day. Highest form of calcium, as well very high in Iodine. Build your dogs strong, and help keep there Thyroid in check.
really your missing out if you don't have this in your feeding system.
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon every day per dog.
