Kathryn, see if your chemist has some wool fat,( lanolin. ) Put it in the fridge so that it solidifies somewhat, and then rub it in the pads. We have used it before and it is very good. We find that it works better if it is semi solid. Do you use a walking machine ?

Mushers Secret which is used on huskies feet google it, can be purchased on the internet, or Neatsfoot Oil used for keeping leather soft and can be purchased at any horse suppliers. I have used both and they work.

You can put band aids on their pads to protect them while healing and working them

Kathryn, if you are walking them for a long period at a time, try and split the time into shorter periods, as the constant walking without a break can cause sore or split pads. What sort of a belt does the machine have ?

Kathryn, try putting the fat on before you walk him, if you are going to use that, and as I said, try and split the time down that he walks on it, as those slats are hard.

I suppose you could try, Kathryn, as long as he tolerates them and they don't make him slip. Good luck, anyway.

It's only wool fat/lanolin, but try and get the actual little tub of the fat, rather than lanolin in a tube if you can. It shouldn;t swab, but find out from GRV just to be sure.

Kathryn I have tried everything and I can honestly say the only 2 things that work are Mushers Secret which is used on Huskies feet to stop the ice from cracking the pads it stays on as a layer of wax. Also Neatsfoot Oil which soaks into the cracked pads and softens them up. Everything else you are wasting time and money.

Terry, Kathryn's query was from 2 years ago, so hopefully she has fixed the problem by now.
