Hi I have owned a couple of Greyhounds previously but always had them with trainers throughout the whole process. I have decided to give it a go at rearing and training for the first time. I live at Budgewoi on the Central Coast and was wondering if anyone could help me out with sourcing good quality foods for the dog as well as a good vet that deals with greyhounds.

I am going to use Hills Science Diet Puppy and I have read a couple of threads and debates about dry food and this is just something I have chosen to go with as it is only for the one pup so it isn't a massive issue cost wise for me.

I want to get good quality mice (Chicken and Beef) and wanted to no where people where sourcing there products around Budgewoi.

I also wanted any info on a good quality Greyhound Vet as well if possible as I have only found general vets in the area and none of them seem to specialise in the breed.

I am also going to be rearing in a suburban home so exercise will be walking and we also have a beach close by for dogs so to avoid a lot of issues we would be hitting the beach at around 530am in the morning so he can have a gallop and we also have a bush track up the road but I am worried about ticks. Does anyone have any good areas to free gallop the dogs and pups.

I have read a couple of threads on this subject in regards to rearing and I have a basic diet in mind but any hints or tips would be much appreciated.

The pup I am getting is from a litter Banjo Boy X Buxton Miss and he is only about 18-20 weeks old when I get him here (from memory.

Thanks in advance everyone your help will be a massive help.

Woy Woy Poultry is where you can source your meat from both chicken and beef. And as for a vet travel to Belmont Veterinary Clinic and see Peter Yore as far as specialist greyhound vets he is one of the best in the business

lukes info is spot on, but i would be careful taking the dog to the beach. A lot of dogs off leads are at the beach. You give the impression you are going to let the dog run around of the lead as well. I would not be doing that.

Woy woy poultry will deliver meat to your place, their number is 43419436,LAURIE REFFALO is agreat bloke to do business with he also supplies a variety of other meats for human consumption.
Regarding beach galloping be very careful for loose dogs ,when I go I take someone with me I take some meat and a skin show them to the dogs ,get your mate to hold them walk up the beach preferably on the wet sand for about 300 or so metres and whistle them up ,When they come up let them grab the skin and put lead on them straight away, give them a piece of the meat you took with you,the dogs will soon get the idea and will slip up to you every time,

As for vets PETER YORE IS THE ONE TO SEE but you have to make an appointment with Belmont vet surgery, ph. no.49459044
Hope this helps and look forward to meeting up with you on a race track, I also live on the central coast,

Exercise in the morning rest during the day plenty of bones and goats milk and let him back out in the cool of the nite before sunset and he will be ready for the rigours of breaking in by 14 mnths. You CANT GALLOP THEM ENOUGH.Find a fenced park where the grass is kept good by council and find ways to get him too run you don't want a fat spoilt pet come break in because he will be a pet after breakin.ITS THAT SERIOUS.

A big thanks to everyone with the info. I have read up a few threads on here in regards to beach galloping and I will be trying to do it before work early in the mornings to avoid other dogs. I will also be using another person as suggested. But the skin and meat idea is something I will be using thanks.

I have thought about leader pets and that is where i purchase my pet dogs food and wasnt sure if it was top standard but ill go down and have a chat to them.

Does anyone have any fence off areas they no of that I could saftley take my pup for a free gallop?

I was alos looking into the beach walk in the mornings as already stated and a good walk late at night on the footpaths near lakes beach past the Toukley golf course. Is that to much excersise for a young pup.

I just want to try and keep him from being bored at home. I have a pet dog but she is only tiny Shitzu x and I am not sure if I should keep them seperate or while the Grey is a pup let them mingle and play in the back yard.

Brendon do your self a favour and read the subjects on rearing by greats like ted doss, pringles and wheeler.Than try in your own way too implement the basics like good quality food and plenty of galloping.Walkings great down to the beach or park but let the lead go every day because time will fly and the pup wont be conditioned for the rigours of racing.

Could I also ask if you guys would suggest walking the pup with a muzzle or not.

I spoke to GRNSW and they told me that it is a judgement call by me as to if I do or don't.

The pup is only 4 1/2 months old so I didn't think it was necessary at that age but curious what others think.

I have also come to use a diet of the following.

Mornings day 1, 3, 5 and 7

2x wheat bix with puppy milk and water. 1x yolk from egg (no whites)
and kibble. with Calci-D mixed in as well

Afternoons day 1, 3, 5 and 7

400g Beef mince and 100g chicken mince as well as top up of kibble and Fish Oil.

Morning 2, 4 and 6

Cup of oats with a splash of Natural honey Puppy Milk and Kibble. Also Calci-D.

Afternoons 2, 4 and 6

400g of Beef Mince and 100g of Chicken mince and Fish Oil.

I will also be giving the pup a Roo tail once a week for his teeth.

We will be taking the pup for a walk and free gallop at the beach in the morning for around 45 minutes around 5:30am to avoid a lot of animal traffic as well as the wife at about 250mtrs away with a squeaker to get him having a good little run.

Also a walk for about 45 minutes of an afternoon.

During the day he will be in his pen or in a grassed area about 20mtrs by 15mtrs.(Fenced area in the back yard).

Also thinking about letting the pup come for a swim in our pool once a week with us for something different especially when its hot.

Also spend about 30 minutes a day in the back yard with a squeaker toy and getting him bitting down on it.

Ill be walking in the mornings and the old man will be walking of a night. The wife will get him bitting on the squeaker and playing with it.

Does this seem like a reasonable plan to follow or is there a good suggestion that I could be missing.

Also thanks for the suggestion to use Woy Woy Poultry.

I spoke to Laurie yesterday and get my first order delivered tomorrow afternoon.

Very reasonable prices and only $2.20 delivery fee all the way to me for spending over $100.

Again a big thanks for the help.

Hi Brendon,

Although I'm also fairly new to the rearing game, I have received a lot of valuable knowledge from some of the games best. Only thing I would recommend to you is they can't have too much food or too much galloping. Try not to worry so much about weighing his meals at such a young age, just feed him until he stops eating.

Good luck with it and it looks like you have the dogs best interest in mind, so that's a good start.

Just remember not to mix calcium with any cereal meals (like weetbix) as it renders it useless so you're just throwing money out the end of the bum lol

And don't measure the feed either when it's young puppies, they shouldn't eat such a big meal in one go like a grown dog, just feed them plenty and enough for them to feel a little full, feed 3 small meals 3 times a day until 5 months old then cut back to 2 meals a day.

Ideally if they're being reared on their own in a backyard, they also need to be reared with another dog for company and to learn socialisation skills. (it used to be said that a puppy reared on its own would turn into a fighter or a non chaser, not always, there's been successful exceptions but it's always best for them to learn socialisation skills by living and playing with another dog in their own time rather than being taken out for long walks and meeting another dog somewhere else)

Puppies under 6 months old IMO shouldn't be taken out in public places (streets etc) to be walked such a long way, there is the risk of picking up a disease like parvo, distemper, etc from the ground and from strange dogs who may not be vaccinated.
Beach is a safer place as long as there are no other dogs around that frequent it.
At that age they need a lot of galloping and sleeping, so just 20 mins at the beach twice a day and it'll be apples :-) no need to go 45 mins unless it's just to potter around, as puppies tend to go fast in short bursts then rest, then go again then rest, then they sleep all day until the afternoon :-)

Good luck and enjoy your new puppy! I have a bitch that's just been mated to Banjo Boy, he is one of the most popular and upcoming young sires atm :-)

Thanks for the info Lianne I got him yesterday and have had him in the yard with my other little shitzu and I have decided to give him about a week to get used to us before we take him to the beach. But he loves chasing the soccer ball around the yard and then crashed out. I am glad you mentioned the info about the Claci D as I would have mixed it in.

EXTERNAL LINK
A link to our pup having a run at the beach.

Didnt take him long to chase that squeaker toy.

He happily runs down the beach about 250mtrs and comes straight to the squeaker and once he gets the squaker he doesnt want to let go.

Seems super keen and on walks everytime a car goes past he wants to chase it.

I have also booked in with Peter Yore for a check up so thanks for that info much appreciated.
