im looking for vet recommendations for a 10 mth old pup with a very suspect shoulder...ive had him to a couple of good checkers one recommended an x ray . im not ready to give up on him just yet .

Can anyone recommend a vet between say grafton and Brisbane who would know how to interpoertd diagnose and treat a dog from a shoulder xray

In other words who is the gun !

David, if the X-ray shows he has OCD, the vet can do an operation to remove the misplaced tissue in the joint, and the dog can have a successful racing career. Just make sure you do find a good vet. Good luck !

This is a very unusual pup ...he almost does not look like a greyhound he has massive hind quarters and is very long ...he has allways looked short in the front leg and now at 10 mths is large but he stil has massive growth knuckles on front legs to grow into .

He literally runs like a 3 legged labradoor ...he can have a reasonable sprint but looks so awkward ...its almost like he has a dislocation or the whole shoulder girdle is not functioning properly and he cant stretch out properly . and he limps on his shoulder afterwards.

I don't want to give up on him ...keep looking at how long he is and his massive hind quarters ...if I can fix him up front who knows ?

Osteochondritis dissecans, David. Sometimes occurs in big pups, in a shoulder joint. It is a misplaced flap of cartilage in the joint space, which obviously causes a big problem. It can be removed surgically. I know of a couple of greys who had the operation and had successful racing careers.
You can find more information about it in dogs on the internet.

David, I'm sure your original suggestion, Liz Brown, would be very good. This condition, that I know of in greys, usually occurs in only one shoulder, so fingers crossed for your dog.

ok well his left is the obvious one ....one text I read reckons it occurs in both shoulders up to a third of cases ...not sure if I would go to those lengths ..depending on cost

I imagine this opp will cost a fair bit and this to fix a dog that may not run anyway ...maybe im better looking to rehome home as a pet as he is a lovely dog.

Would you care to give me a ball park figure that you think this would /should cost all up ? would you have an idea ?

No idea, I'm afraid, David. It depends on the vet. It is pretty obvious if they do have the condition, so if he is only having problems with the one shoulder, then you may find that it is the only one that is affected.
