Hello and thanks in advance for any feedback...
I have a dog in my kennel thats has lost his form,he is a genuine honest dog that has been in the top 3,9from 10 starts and his last line of form he led in a final going from first to last over a short distance!

As a result I brought him to be checked out which no injury came back but blood test showed low white blood cells.I was told to leave him of 5 weeks in which I left him of for the the duration of the Christmas period in around 12 weeks. I then re qualified and the time was still back,I sent him for new blood tests and still they where low.As a result the dog is left off again.

Im just curious as to no is there any way to get this dogs white blood cells back up to normal,or is this a common problem ? There was no sign of immune system or infections of any sort in the result just low.No further injury to the dog as he was checked again.Dog is in great form and bouncing wants to be out and racingbut just running flat hes current race form doesnt match hes race card form so Iv left him off..Hes a3 now just gone two years but his brother has won a round of last years irish derby, this dog can run and is better than what hes doing, and I believe even when he was in top form this issue was on going as once he hit the 3rf bend he began to tire and he is bred to stay further and all siblings are stayers but this lad loses ground coming home and I believe maybe its down to this issues !

Any advice would be great thanks

Ask a vet who you trust , but they should all be able to pin point exactly what supplements to recommend pending on exactly what figures were down or not quite right ! Yes it's common and I believe it would be made even more common if it was made compulsory for every new owner or trainer to have blood tests done
From personal experience, white or red blood or both cells down I was instructed to give , Fefol , Vitamin C and Thyroxine tablets (1 of each only) None are swabable regardless of what some might tell you
I'll gaurentee you will have to add one .. both ... or all of these and his original characteristics will return !
Another blood test will be required to monitor progress or lack of ... 4 weeks after first administered.
I'm sure carol will be more precise in advice , but a close look at his blood charts is obviously the best way to pass an opinion on a way forward
Good luck you'll be right , you've had a lot of wasted time but imop
Get a new vet , shouldn't have taken this long .....tests and supplements administrated, should have been fixed and on his way in under 21 days , not 120 days ???

Dayne, if you can get hold of your blood test reading and post them, someone on here might give ya a better idea. Could be anything. Infection, parasite infection. This is a great site for that

Dayne, put the WBC, haemoglobin, and PCV ( haematocrit ) readings up on here if you will. The "normal" readings for these tests over your way are very often of no relevance to normal greyhound readings, as they are based on pet dogs.
Also, have his tonsils been thoroughly checked, as an untreated, chronic infection here will often make a dog tire badly in its races.

When an infection or virus is present the white cells are high as they are produced to fight the infection.
Did the vet or pathologist that organised the blood tests give any explanation or suggested courses of action other than rest?
How are the dogs iron levels Dayne?
