Hi All I have a nice 21 month old boy going well won 4 of 9.
He runs really wide I mean really wide on bends 6/7/8 wide then motors up the straight every run! 8 runs at one track then 1 run at another track same result.

I have read a lot about extra ribs in dogs either attached or floating which can impact dogs running wide.
He definately has an extra half rib on his left side which sticks out a little.
He has ability and still runs well , our vet suggests let it go for now and he hasn't taken out a rib in 20yrs!

Here lies the question what do I do? I know if this is the issue he will improve heaps however I am very unsure in regards to even getting it done without some more hard core info re this.

QUESTION

Has anyone RECENTLY had /seen or heard of any greyhound have this operation and what was the resulting outcome?
Does anyone know of a VET anywhere in AUS that has done this recently?
I am really interested in talking to the right people to gather facts !

Hi Dwayne,

The first thing you need to confirm is...is the rib the actual problem.
Just because it is there does not mean it is the cause.
A competent Vet of experienced muscle man should be able to manipulate it enough to confirm discomfort or not...alternatively an x-ray.

If you have confirmed it is not the rib, then there are many possibilities, including bone or tendon issues.
Finding a good muscle man is the key to solving the problem...worth their weight in gold.

Good luck.

P.S. Which state do you live in?

Spot on Michael thanks for the feefback
It's highly unlikely I will get it out as he is still going good and I couldn't bare for anything to go wrong!however really interested if anyone out there has actually gone ahead with an operation and the outcome!
I am in SA

We had a girl of ours with an extra rib also, and have since had it removed. Was pulling up a bit sore and running wide also, so we opted to get it taken out.

The person who found it (forgot his name), said he had a few cases that had it removed and had improved 10 Lengths.

If its pinching their muscle/nerves it can be slowing them down

I'm sure someone from SA can recommend a good Greyhound vet there.
I don't think it is a major op if in fact it IS the rib that's causing the problem...
The other possibility is he has made it a habit and it's now in his head.
Usually from hurting themselves in the past and remembering the pain caused on corners.
Anyway, hope you get to the bottom of it...can be frustrating.

It's interesting that he only coursed wide at his only start at a/pk on the home turn and not before. He coursed wide nearly all the way at the other track.
Did he do a fibula or pin at that track previously, Dwayne?

Dwayne, 1 of Angela Modras just had it done a few months ago,
think it was Dolly Jo. Pretty sure she said Chris Girling did the op.

Kata is a very experienced vet and I dare say if he says it doesnt need to be removed then it shouldnt be bothering him.
Saying that I know of afew that have had ribs removed . Some improved others dont. Not a hard or expensive op. Around the $500 mark.
Striker klinsman had a spare rib sticking out very bad. Didnt seam to affect him but u will never know. If it worries you then I say just do it.

Kata is a great vet - being a unique issue I just can't see a black or white answer so seeking heaps of feedback is what I am after. I will keep him going as is -however if at some stage push comes to shove I would like to have an idea as to what I may do based on others actions and findings. Thanks for the feedback by all so far!

I have had a few dogs with spare ribs enter my kennel.I subscribe to their removal before they get into full work. The worst ones are those that go back into the dog much like a fish hook they can do internal damage. You will only lose around 2 weeks then back into work.Ideally these should be removed when pups - good luck whatever u decide.

A friend of mine owns a bitch which has since retired that had a rib removed prior to racing. She showed promise as a pup after break in but would struggle when trialled on the tighter tracks. After the rib(s) were removed she improved lengths on the clock and went on to win 17 races. Some of her times will prove just how quick she was.
Her name is Senorita Jem and you can check her form on the Dogs site.

Thanks All for your terrific feedback!
I decided after a lot of follow up , discussion and advise from all areas of the greyhound arena to go ahead and have his rib removed!
Thankfully the op went great ( thanks to the Katakasi touch) he is doing very well and we will see the outcome when he returns to the track in a few months!
Cheers!
