got an injury on a handy dog the tendon on the back of the front leg running down to stopper bone has swollen and has a lump like a sultana in it ...dog has been out for 2 mths now ...im rehabbimnh him at home to help my trainer ...initially we used b brine gum turpentine ..which helped ..but i think too much use of that kept it swolen and too much fluid aroound it ...dog will run thru it and i tape him and give him small free gallops ...it seems to be reponding slowly and lately i have been rubbimng lkinseed oil and some good quality arnica in ..and that seems ok too ...just wondering has any one had a lot of expereince with this type of injury and what did they do for good results ...there is no doubt it is potentially careeerr ending

Unfortunately david that type of injury is usually career ending ive had 3 dogs with the same injury in the last few years all of them with the thickening of the tendon the first 2 of them i persevered for months and months trying to get them back near impossible you give them time off walk them swim them and free gallop them then they look and feel right to go so you trial them then almost 100 percent every time they'll pull up lame every time making it impossible to get them fit none of them made it back to the race track sorry for the doom and gloom david but thats how it was

I hate
Brine and Turps .
Put it on your balls and tell me how it feels ..

There are so many more better treatments these days ...

Strains of tendons have been classified as either acute or chronic and of 3 degrees of severity. Your Vet should of advised you of this

Because the muscle contracts when the tendon is ruptured, it results in permanent deformity, so medical management using a cast or splint will not work and the injury must be repaired surgically. The surgical procedure involves removing the damaged portions of the tendon so that the ruptured ends can be reattached together. To reattach the gastrocnemius tendon to the heel bone, bone tunnels are drilled and special nonabsorable sutures are passed through the tunnels and into the tendon.

David, the injury sounds like a serious one. If you have one or can get one I would be using a laser. In the mid 80's my mentor was probably the first to use laser technology on greyhounds. Eg. Busy's Warrior a free for all city class dog at the time did the accessory carpal(stopper) tendon injury, not as serious as your description but still career ending. He raced till he was 5 years and actually won a trailer at that age in a Warrnambool Final.

He was worked on daily for this injury. What the laser can do is it has the ability to break down scar tissue. So give that a go and also space the dogs runs every 10 days to begin with up the straight. The dog may still pull up lame but as you work on it that will probably ease. Cheers

Because Lasers are photo chemical(Photochemical reaction, a chemical reaction initiated by the absorption of energy in the form of light. The consequence of molecules' absorbing light is the creation of transient excited states whose chemical and physical properties differ greatly from the original molecules.) rather than heat related(Ultra sound) long periods of treatment is not needed. I would say a 6 minute treatment in the damaged area would be more that enough, once a day and every day for the dogs racing life.

My laser is a single diode, I would work on the area where the knot or scare tissue is for one minute points, 2 on one side of the tendon and 2 on the other. I would then go up and down the tendon on both sides for say a couple of minutes on both sides. Again, going longer changes nothing only time spent for nothing. It feels strange using a laser because of the time frame but believe me it works.

This injury and the achilleas injury would be the hardest to fix, fingers crossed. Most important, BE PATIENT, one step at a time.

Hi David for sure a good laser will assist. If your interested I will give you $500 off a laser.to help you . When I worked in a racing stable years ago any horse with tendon issues we walk on hard roads and foot paths as this would build tensile strength into the tendon .Give me a call 0419317931 if you want to talk.
Cheers Jack.
