Hi everyone. I recently purchased a dog and since Ive had him he is having difficulty emptying out, he either cant go or if he does he is screeching in pain. His faeces is hard and there is no sign of diarrhoea at any time. Any ideas welcome. I am giving him sardines in sunflower oil and also Udos oil but this doesnt seem to be helping. Is there anything I can add to his diet or any ideas of what the problem may be? Thank you in advance!

are you giving him bones if so stop,it could be blocked anal glands but that would not make his faeces rock hard, try putting a tablespoon of caster oil in his main food for a couple of days that should clear him out,let us know how you get on.

Hi Sarah
I have just been through the same problem here with a bitch I have. My vet recommended 20ml of Paraffin oil orally morning and night and to only feed canned dog food until she was emptying out without any difficultly . It took a few days but all seems fine now

Hi Sarah, paraffin oil is great, as David said. However, he also sounds like he is not getting enough fluid in his meals. Are you soaking his kibble adequately, as too much dry food will make it hard for the dog to empty. Anal gland problems can also make it painful, and too many bones, as Stephen previously mentioned.
Make sure you adjust his diet to increase his hydration levels daily, as fluid is very important in a greyhound diet.
One other thing to mention is that if the dog has a sacral/coccyx problem, it is hard for the dog to push the faeces out. Might be worth getting this checked out as well. Good luck !

Hi Stephen, thanks a lot for the advice. Hes doing much better, changed his diet to brown bread, green veg, tinned sardines in sunflower oil, mixed up in a blender...also a small bit of boiled beef mince. Hes emptying with a lot more ease. Its not the ideal diet for a racer but Ill try him on it for another while and Ill check back in in a week or two with an update..,
