How long does it take to get a dog in gap in your state compared to Tassie taking 5-6 months. Thanks ted.

Lack of re-homing options for greyhounds is what will limit our sports growth

A better and fairer program for masters racing needs to be developed

And more time based graded races for the slower greyhounds

Probably time-based ratings for masters greyhounds should also be introduced to grade them so that a greyhound still capable of running in top grade in fully graded races doesn't race against masters dogs a half a second slower

In time, the opportunities could arise where Masters could have their own FFA grade

These measures alone would slow down the entry to GAP facilities by keeping these dogs competitive as racers

vic has a waiting time of 4 months. but wait theres more
4 months is the time line if the owner instigates the desexing and dental repairs prior to presenting to gap. its appreciated that costs will be reimbursed to a point by grv. these desexed dogs have priority over entires that grv (gap) would be responsible for desexing so for them the wait may be much longer.

its said that we need more and younger people in the sport but many doubt that this will eventuate when the "rule makers" keep burdening the participants with additional responsibility

The problem I have is the retired dogs fill my kennel licence and I have 12 pups from a bitch whom had 7 pups from previous litter and they all won combined $160,000 when advertised pups did not get a reply which leaves me stuck between a rock and a hard place as it puts me well over in numbers. I am sure this will be a common thing as time goes by and it is caused by the authorities and dogooders.Cheers Ted

Hi Ted, is there any chance on expanding your kennel license? the council may work with you and give you twelve months.

I'd offer to help you out but 3 of my runs are gapped out and I've hopefully got Lily Lola in pup to Aston Rupee so getting pushed for room.

goodluck

Cheers and thanks Ted.

They need to purchase forestry or farming land so theres no environmental issues.

I've put off getting trainers license because of the delay and theres no point paying the young blokes handlers license either.

Over 30 giveaways advertised on this site alone. . Is it the bigger fool theory or does it emphasise the problem . Its good to see that when some are moved on they are marked as being Sold.

They advertise in SA 6 weeks average but I think its getting pushed out. There is nearly 100 dogs on the wait list in trainers kennels, theres only so many homes for the dogs Im not sure what the answer is but I think theres going to be an even bigger backlog very soon

Agree with you Kim think it will get worse all over the country and it amazes me when you see what people pay for some pet dogs and they can get a terrific pet greyhound almost free. Cheers Ted.

I've only just lodged some GAP applications in Qld so I have no idea.

What I WILL say is that not only has the pandemic knocked people around but the impact's of flooding in Qld and NSW and increased Interest rate / lack of housing in SO MANY places has an impact on people that are struggling to look after and feed themselves and any family let alone worrying about pets. MANY flood affected folks have surrendered their pets as well overwhelming lots of rescues.

Also many Lockdown impulse purchased pets are now being flicked to shelters because gee they now work again so have no time for their pets.

Overall things are not all lollypops and roses for anyone in this economy and at the end of the day we choose to own or train dogs
we need to learn to suck it up in the short / or long term.

Sorry if that offends anyone but it's facts...

Fully agree Sandro. Lack of speedy acceptance into GAP programs will only see Greyhound racing slide into a slow death.

There are only so many people who wish to adopt greyhounds & only so many retired greyhounds owner's can keep at home themselves, so therefore the Greyhound racing authorities must provide the options for ongoing care of retired greyhounds, or those to slow to make it as a racer.

If they do not do so Greyhound racing's social licence to continue is in severe danger of being taken away.

In the end, the authorities will need to put limits on number of litters bred, particularly by the bigger breeders. It is unsustainable and rehoming (or lack thereof) will end up being then end of racing.

GAP can be described as inadequate at best !

The biggest racing kennel in NSW has been rehoming there Dogs without GAP for years !

If they can do it why can't others ?

should be a condition of our license as owners I am responsible for my dogs I dont use gap never had a problem finding a home for our retired dogs we keep 5 ourselves and when one of them passes we keep another all others we find homes for and we have a small list of people waiting for dogs now if owner dont start taking responsibility for there dogs gap will be the death of our industry I promise you that.
