Water Diabetes in Greyhounds
The most common treatment for diabetes insipidus is desmopressin acetate, a medication that helps to increase water reabsorption in the kidney. It is available as an intranasal spray or oral tablet. Desmopressin acetate is usually given two to three times daily.

Water Diabetes in Greyhounds
What are the symptoms of water diabetes in dogs?
Diabetes Insipidus (Water Diabetes) in Cats and Dogs
Increased thirst/urination (polydipsia/polyuria)
Dehydration.
Disorientation.
Seizures.
Diluted urine.
Weight loss.
The most common treatment for diabetes insipidus is desmopressin acetate, a medication that helps to increase water reabsorption in the kidney. It is available as an intranasal spray or oral tablet. Desmopressin acetate is usually given two to three times daily.
Why is my diabetic dog suddenly drinking so much water?
does salt in dry food contribute to water diabetes in greyhounds
Diabetes mellitus causes high blood sugar that's either due to insulin deficiency or insulin resistance. Excess sugar in the blood is excreted by the kidneys into the urine and drags water along with it. In this case, excessive urination can cause excessive thirst in dogs.
Does dry dog food have a lot of salt in it?
Many dog foods, in particular dry kibble, contain a very high salt content which makes it palatable for your dog but extremely unhealthy. The recommended salt allowance in dry dog food for adult dogs is 0.07% but most dry dog food contains 0.1-0.6% sodium.
Why is my dog drinking lots of water and licking paws?
If your dog is drinking excessively and licking paws, this could be a sign of dehydration. Other symptoms include excessive thirst, lethargy, sunken eyes and reduced appetite. If you suspect that your dog is dehydrated, seek veterinary attention immediately.
What does it mean when a dog drinks water excessively?
If your dog is drinking excessively (polydipsia) it is possibly because he is losing excess amounts of water for any of a number of reasons. While a number of diseases result in excess water intake and urine output, the most common of these diseases include kidney failure, diabetes mellitus and Cushing's disease.
What are 3 symptoms of undiagnosed diabetes in dogs?
Excessive water drinking and increased urination.
Weight loss, even though there may be an increased appetite.
Decreased appetite.
Cloudy eyes (especially in dogs)
Chronic or recurring infections (including skin infections and urinary infections)

Hi Robyn ,never second-guess water diabetes.Take the dog to the vets get a full blood profile done.& a specific gravity test. These tests will tell the vet how the dog's kidneys are operating and what treatment is required.
