How disappointing that there are only two heats for the WA Sprint Championships at Cannington on Saturday night. Are there really only 16 dogs (plus 3 reserves) in WA that can compete at this level?

NSW was the same but the final is a absolute cracker...quality is always better than quantity but I understand your point as the distance final is no where near the same.

It might be a very disappointing number of dogs in the WA Sprint Championship heats especially as the finals are being held there, but good luck to Zelemar Fever, "you go girl" :)

Whats the go with NSW and Victoria both only having 2 heats for the National Sprint, and NSW could only got two 6 dog fields with no reserves, I know its in WA and people dont always want to travel but youd think NSW and Victoria would get more nominations than that, a lot of the better dogs arent in it either

If the dog population is down it follows that top sprint and distance numbers will be down, too.

All states are involved but WA is always the first to feel the pressure - hence the easing of grading rules for imports from the East and lots of 388m or shorter races in prime time meetings. WA is always the canary in the coalmine. I can't remember when SA last had a decent stayer. Or Tassie.

The NSW distance quali is the same old suspects going around again. Top stayers are as rare as hens teeth. Why so?

SA had a good stayer called Bogie Bekim about 2 or 3 years ago

NSW badly need 600m start at wentworth park the only city track without one but I can not see that happening seeing there has not been any progress with anything at all in nsw

Sandro,

"SA had a good stayer called Bogie Bekim about 2 or 3 years ago".

I am aware of that. He was an honest plodder and poor beginner doing his best but never ran time in his life. Check out the opposition he beat.

Very true. A bit off topic but, nominally, it would be a good lead-up to 700 capability.

My understanding is that underground engineering problems are a barrier at WP but where would you put the boxes anyway?

Every one of those other city tracks has a 600 and every one starts on a bend. WA/Cannington seriously considered starting theirs in a more kindly shute but then said, no, we'll start on the bend.

There are five TAB tracks surrounding WP and every one of those has a bend start 600 (Bulli would be the best). All five have had big money spent on them over the last decade or so. Gosford even got a new 388m - starting on a bend - to replace the old bend start 400. Whooppee!

The new Traralgon will have no 600/650/700/750 at all. Work that out.

No Gillian Bruce will tell you the person who pointed out the underground problem was and is still connected to track operations? But the problem was stated as a underground pipe, in the area that the 600 start would built on ,, but as we all said the underground pipe must be very deep and out of contention to interfere with boxes above ,as the infield is quiet a bit lower than the dog track, and no pipe is showing on the playing field , We questioned the problem but as stated here , no one was serious about wanting to do anything so it was dropped altogether on one false report, Drain Pipe underneath ?? Bob Glover p.s. Ask where our states Straight Track is /and when its about to happen , S.A. looks good and done on a respectable budget ?

Geeeez honest plodder probably going a tad far. He was def a talented dog ! Its not like group class stayers just fall outta the sky there isnt really an abundance of them anywhere in the country !

Not exactly household names but decent SA stayers in last decade would be

Bogie Bekim
Cairnlea Jet
Springvale Bryne
Luna Jinx
On fire
Kalden Mayhem
Grifter Bale

Ted,

I agree with that although I don't know Bellwether.

Some time ago though.

Damien and Sandro,

Performances in SA are not a great guide to what happens in other states and when the opposition is tougher.

I can't believe you put On Fire in there as it could not really run out the 731m anyway. A hugely talented dog restricted only by its ability to jump, and well suited otherwise over 500 and 600 (if a bit erratic).

Bogie Bekim was also hampered by it slowish starts. When it got away better it could run 43.1 at Angle Park (9 lengths outside the record). Often it did not. The Top Gun you quoted at Meadows was 10 lengths outside the record, although it did run down Fanta Bale which was never well known for its last 50m.

I appreciate that a trainer might be well satisfied by 25 or so wins - some of which were rewarding. As a punter I could not rely on it because of its erratic performances and general failure to run time. I would never know what I am going to get. Each to his own.

We will agree to disagree. Your marking the dog on it as a betting proposition.

WA galaxy winner
Top Gun winner
2nd in association cup

To suggest its a plodder is nothing short of laughable. I didnt realise sweet it is , miata , xylia Allen , Fanta Bale and tornado tears were all yours
