The English derby cannot be won by any dog possessing true early pace, it is a competition for the staying types. With the ridiculous long run to the pick up the dogs are running 600 plus at full speed. The three runs in a week is almost cruel to a non staying type.

If it were not for the prize money early paced dogs should stay at home. True speed is no longer required what should be the real test of speed like the 100m in athletics is devalued. With the Irish derby a 550 we have no blue ribbon for speed......sad.

I can't think of the logic behind having the escape so far away. It doesn't seem necessary and it is breaking the hearts of pure speedsters.

I agree with u Seamus in a way but Chart king (winner of 1999 English Derby)was all about early pace,I handled Chart king for a lot of his career and he definitely wasn't a staying type to say the least!!! He was all early pace!!

Agree with you for the most part Seamus though i wouldn't say we have no blue ribbon event for the speedsters....in England there's the Coral sprint over the 400 metres which is one of my favorite events every year won a couple of years ago by Blonde Snapper who went on to win the derby, and over here we have the Bar One held in Dundalk every year though i do have a problem with that event because there's no chance for the winner of that comp to contest our derby
