At tonight's Albion Park Greyhound race meeting, which might I add is the PREMIER RACE MEETING of the week in Queensland...a Class 1, sees 10 races as per usual....BUT.

Races 1 & 2 which are both "Novice" events & are for young pups that have only won a maiden race, have only received enough starters to fulfill just 7 of the 8 boxes in each race (Box 5 is vacant).

For the remaining 8 races on the meeting sees just 2 dogs covering ALL REVERSE positions..out of 16 chances.

Looks like the shortage regarding the breeding of pups has officially begun.

The shortage was always going to start up here first Mick.

Qld might have been, or should I say WERE the 3rd most activity State in Australia regarding pups bred & racing......but we still need cast-offs from down your way to make ends meet due to the strength of your State.

That combined with the lack of breeding due to a hand full of reasons including the stupid 80%, 80%, %60 rule & the lies from the State Government (which will cost them shortly) for nearly 9 years regarding a promised new track, have resulted in the Greyhound State of Queensland to suffer first, out of all States in Australia.

You Mexicans will be right for at least another 15 month, possible forever, as your State regarding greyhounds is the place to be & will be the LAST to ever suffer.....But that won't happen due to the big plan that's been already determined behind closed doors by Government.

The amount of extended nominations in Victoria has been growing by the month, they are struggling to fill fields and have been for quite sometime.
Imo I don't think the breeding restrictions have had any effect on fields in Qld whatsoever.........it's too early, it's more likely the fact that many are fed up with incompetence at the higher level. They are forcing ( and in many cases rightly so) On the ground roots participants to be more professional but they themselves Qgr and nswgr are far from professional themselves.

Until now.

Which obviously contributes to the breeding pool.

Couldn't agree more Ben from my experiences (with QLD) in the past year or so.

Like I said.......The SHORTAGE has begun.

Yes Steve your right but you forgot to mention the "pups" part
"Looks like the shortage regarding the breeding of pups has officially begun."
Just a question how can the restrictions be having any effect on fields now?
If they are short now look out in 12months time.
The breeding restrictions can't possibly have an effect on fields today

Fair question Ben...& to make it easy to gauge that comment is quite simple for me, by stating the following.

I bred 2 litters right when the sh1t hit the fan back in early 2015......That's when the breeding across the nation slowed dramatically. Those 2 litters are now approaching 2 years which alerts me immediately to when the shortage of young pups reaching racing age will begin.

The 2 races that I pointed out last night that contained vacant boxes, just happen to be for youthful inexperienced greyhounds namely "Novice" events.

Even race 1 at Ipswich Saturday night a 520m Maiden will go around with just 6 starters.

Coincidence? Maybe but I think not.

I think we're just starting to feel the ramifications (especially up here in Qld) that started 2 years ago.....JMO.

Cheers

Tonight's fields at Albion Pk - Class 1.

10 races.

6 races - full field + 2 reserves.
1 race - full field - no reserves.
3 races - 7 runners.

With the LACK of dogs being bred over the last 24 months, the grading system needs an URGENT OVERHAUL in QLD before 520m TOP GRADE dogs are sidelined, or forced to be transferred to interstate trainers.

If you've had experience within the industry for 20 PLUS years, you don't have to be Einstein to work out we're closing in on a crisis in this area.......but I doubt the're any in power that can see E = mc2.

I don't think you needed to be genius to work that out.

Breeding is starting to pick yes it will take a few years. For those who kept breeding they will reap the rewards.

Darren
I dealt with Qld Greyhound breeders on a daily basis for 30 years and the things that motivated those people was the the hope of breeding that champion or just the anticipation of breeding a better than average litter that would go to the races and pay their way.
QRIC and RQ have imposed all these new restrictions, rules, impositions, increased fees and charges that make it impossible for those thinking of breeding a litter in this state without a large $$$$ bank unrealistic. The hope of getting a return for your time effort and $$ outlay just isn't there. Confidence in the Industry and its Administration going forward is at a all time low. Why would you bother !!

The 2 other codes have Breeding Incentives while the Greyhound breeders get zilch..

What does that tell you , do they even want us . ! !

I agree with you Ben.

I think you will find breeding didn't declined until mid 2016. We got a bitch late 2016 from NSW when things looked really bad.

I think we will feel the real effects 2018-2019. For those who have bred in the past 6-12 months you could be sitting on gold.

More individual dogs are being nominated in Victoria now than ever. The breeding crunch is 12 months away, pretty good time now to jump in and breed a litter or two

Michael

Do you find that owners/trainers are deferring retirement of their dogs and racing them on for longer?

I think they'll be coming back from here Steven when people learn unless they are elite on pace runners they are given little to no chance to win races anymore.

Took a bitch in today to be AI'd, $5.5K for straw,$700 Insemination
Just the beginning (Of Costs). Am I excited? No bloody stressed. (Have I made the right move, investing in Greyhound Racing) when confidence in the future is at an all time low.

True & that has always been the way....But the grading system is designed to keep dogs in 5th / 4th grade, which is good for participants & for a return on there investment.....But that was when plenty of dogs were around & coming through.
With less dogs, you'll have less progressing forward to top grade which will create another problem.
My crystal ball is telling me the grading system on class 1 & 2 tracks in Qld need reviewing now imo.

I already have Einstein. You obviously don't pay attention. Do a search.

Keep breeding.
