Just throwing it out there, but I reckon the 2017 Sandown Cup is the best field for a staying final I've seen. Not just the Sandown Cup, but any stayers final. Ever.

Totally agree michael. Is there any chance you can chat to sky and stop them running audio of some international racing right up to race time. It is infuriating to not be able to hear the commentators apart from outright annoying.
And I think it shows complete disrespect to the greyhounds.

During these big meetings, the international racing which is just there to strangle more $$$ out of punters should be on the 2nd channel for those who are interested

Am I the only one who thinks GRV should put out some sort of press release to tell us why Jason Thompson is still training??? Wasn't he DQd for 3 months??? Have I missed something??? Cannot find any info on the stewards or radb pages, just a main feature interview on his chances of winning the Sandown Cup.
Bewildering. Good dog that.

Well done, Sandown. That would have to be one of the CLEANEST nights racing I have seen in many a year. The best dog on the night won the race with most having every chance if they were good enough.
Keep it up. Good job.

Striker Light and Up Hill Jill meet again in Thursday's $145,000 Group 1 Sapphire Crown.
It will be the seventh time they've met and sixth in a Group final.

She's one of the most exciting staying prospects in the country, but a nomination mic up nearly cost Midnight Elsa a spot in the world's richest race for stayers - EXTERNAL LINK

What a big call - but certainly a difficult betting proposition. The running will play a big part.
Nominally, Burn One Down is comfortably the best performed but is prone to mistakes. Two runners cannot quite run out the trip and another is having her second only run over 715m so we can't be sure how she will handle it this time.
All have been running in the high 41 sec bracket or slower (record 41.17) and all are now backing up 7 days after tough runs. That's problematic itself.
Useful field on current standards but no way is this the "best ever". That would be insulting to past champions.

Did say it's the best I've seen. I've never seen a better all round final, certainly not one off the top of my head.
Fanta Bale is a chance to create some history, good to see Robert Britton's American experiment starting to pay dividends - EXTERNAL LINK

A couple of upsets in the G1s tonight but how good is Fanta Bale!!! Not many dogs win a G1 let alone 3 in 3 month over all distances 525,600 and 715 huge effort!

Fine effort by Fanta Bale, especially coming from behind.
Aside from Dundee Osprey, all runners including the winner ran slower time than in the heats. 2, 3, 4, 5 faded while Dundee looked weary.
A few can handle two 700s in 7 days - most can't.

I tend to agree with what you say - generally backing up takes its toll but surely in this instance a couple may have been underdone ie burn one down publicly stated as only having one 600 mtr run in 10 weeks and midnight elsa having only a handful of starts may have gone better under different circumstances

Plus Teddy Monelli has a less than ideal prep, Brolly Bale has a 42.32 best at the track.
Take nothing away from Fanta Bale - she's an absolute super star. Summary and replay - EXTERNAL LINK

Bruce - your theory on stayers not backing up is complety flawed. If you bother to look only one bitch ran faster in the sapphire crown final and that was the winner, while only 2 dogs ran faster in the Harrison Dawson final an they ran 3rd an 4th. Does this mean only a few dogs can handle two runs in 7 days?
Common sense would tell you that when 8 dogs of similar ability have to race each other things an never going to be the same as last week. I.e Fanta from box 1 in the heats could lead a lot easier than last night. I see grv credit her with being checked 2 lengths. That brings her time down to 41.75. Only 0.02 slower than her heat win, an I believe it's safe to say the track was 3 lengths slower than the previous week (515 best of night was 5 lengths slower) so really it could be argued Fanta has actually gone faster...
And if your going to bother replying with some silly reasoning please include a final where every dog has run faster than their heat times.
