Dogs are get sick and tired of chasing flying rags and getting no reward. It's only going to get worse.

Carole,
My main paddock/field is full of bits of old rags, they started out as old jumpers or pairs of jeans, kids teddy bears etc and ended up getting torn into 100's of pieces.Old rags are the incentive, it's all fun to them.

IMO the main problem in Australia is the choice of bitch to breed from.
My own research (amongst our own stud books) shows that when people breed from disqualified, awkward, or non chasers (they are all not chasing really), that only 1 in every 3 greyhounds actually make it to the track.

For this reason, I PERSONALLY only ever breed from bitches who are both fast enough, AND SUPER KEEN. I can give any of my broods a lure with a squeaker in it, go away for 10 minutes, and when I come back they will still be playing with it ragging and making it squeak.

In the last 8/9 years, EVERY pup that I have reared here has made the track unless they were injured (broken hock etc).

The TRAINING for the pups starts at just 4/5 weeks old, and is a must before 7 weeks old. My pups do not need 'teasing' to chase, they want to do it.

Until people realise that by breeding from 'problem' bitches (or using stud dogs that aren't quite at it) they are only adding to the problem - not solving it. IT WON'T CHANGE OVERNIGHT but long term you will see a real difference.

Don't kid yourself that you can 'straighten them out'.

In short,
Keen bitch
keen dog
good rearing
happy days.

This is very disappointing...

From now on, Qld GAP now require ALL Greyhounds to undergo a Vet exam and behaviour assessment BEFORE entry.

I've been told it is quite comprehensive and the Vet will have to sign off on it.
The cost of such an examination is anyone's guess, that's if you can find a Vet to put their name to a submission that becomes part of the intake.

It is a HUGE BACKWARD STEP and potentially halts the progress made by GAP in recent times, whereas in other states they are EXPANDING.
I'm sure some owners will now consider GAP too hard and the large amount of staff may have a lot more time on their hands.

Whoever thought of this is heading in the wrong direction.
They some time ago waived entry fees for owners and the response has been great, NOW they have decided to make it HARDER!

WHY?!?!?!?

"G.A.P. Bound" may soon be less relevant.

Ridiculous, isn't it, Steven. No wonder there are so many dogs not interested. They were never meant to chase rags flying in the air.

I have a few dogs in the kennel who I think are gay so I showed them a pink rag. Well bugger me dead they seem to like it, so I call on the clubs to show sexual equality, damn it!
Let's have Blue and PINK flapping pieces of rotten synthetics in the name of fairness for the gender bender dogs out there.
With the current issues of same sex marriage and squatting male dogs and confused bitches who think they are male boxers, we should demand pink AND blue lures in the name of fairness and work place equality.

We like to think we are the world leader in greyhound racing but the Irish lure running along at ground level, altering course and twitching tail is so much more natural. There would not be many dogs who would not chase it. Agreed they have it too far in front but that is due to outside lure. Only lunatic dogs will chase a mid-air towel for very long. Lure should look like a hard and run low down like a hard.

The New Zealanders do a great job with their finish on lure for their dogs. I cannot see any reason why we cannot do the same thing here. Their dogs seem to CHASE very well and love their REWARD.

My gay boys would like that.
For the safe sex conscious dogs we could maybe have a condom on the lure too...preferably PINK.

You totally crack me up Michael. Lol.

As funny as that is, it's probably only a rainbow cloud around the corner.

But why stop there.
Why don't we add some glitter to the PINK flapping pieces of rotten synthetics.
What about a chain instead of rope that suspends the "Bitza of this..Bitza off that" off the ground, for that really gay I want to chase look.
And maybe a bag full of custard as a reward for the first dog that stick his nose in.
