From the NZ Greyhound Association Website:

----------------------------------------------
New Rule and Policy

Please view the following new rule and policy, also to be published in February On Track magazine.

A copy of the new Rule book can now be viewed on our website under Rules and Policies.

There has been a number of calls asking what is and isnt allowable in terms of the Rule and policy?

The only allowable material is TANNED SHEEPSKIN.

Squeakers are NOT allowed (you must use something like a bottle with stones in it, a rattle, or some other means of audible device that does not mimic an animal

If you are given old club lure skins, this is allowable

Can I make synthetic lures, YES

What if I buy a synthetic toy and it has a squeaker in it - Either puncture it so it doesn't make a noise, or remove it

Can i use a tanned possum skin - NO

Common sense will tell you, if you are nervous about the type of product your using - Keep the receipt

Again - Approved means - A Lure that:

(a) is made up of professionally tanned sheepskin;

or (b) is made up of purely synthetic materials;

or (c) is made up of a combination of (a) and (b).

NO SQUEAKERS

Are squeakers still used on race day or have rocks been substituted?
This is insane.

It appears that the "YES" campaigners have been emboldened, and are now hell bent on imposing their beliefs,however misguided, upon the silent majority. ( Just a bunch of Soy milk drinkers, who don't realise Soy milk is not real milk!)

They are a small majority who make a lot of noise but if they actually cared about animals they would look further than what they think is obvious. As i see it Greyhounds come into two different categories(I know others don't see it this way.] We have the chasers and the racers. We all vary in which type of animal we choose to race. Personally I prefer the racers. These are not mad keen chasers but are dead keen racers and will run their heart out to beat the other dogs. The chasers are mad keen to chase and will chase anything that moves often these don't make good pets as they chase anything. However those who think they have the knowledge want to encourage us to breed to the more aggressive type of dog by not allowing us to use lures (and now in NZ squeakers.)this stops us from make a game of it for our racing inclined pups. Because of this i have now chosen more aggressive type dogs to breed to. I have noticed the hard chasers only chase as long as they feel they have a chance of being in the first bunch chasing the lure. If they fall behind the racing instinct does not come into play and their aggression is often turned to the dog beside them. Not only that the racing dog is more aware of the dogs around them as they are trying to beat them. This results in less interference and less injuries. The hard chaser will run over the top of or into other dogs in pursue of the lure resulting in more injuries. I think the welfare are doing their best to make life comfortable for the animals but lack the knowledge of how a dog thinks and reacts. Just my thoughts

As a FISH is not an animal and doesn't make a sound, perhaps we can all start using Tuna Sandwiches - hold the mayo!
