Hi Carly,

If employees were working on a casual or f/t basis at tracks, they could join the AWU and possibly be working under the `Theatrical Award' (no joke) because the employer is providing entertainment. However, they must be employed and working of course. It's unconfirmed information.

However, if an employee is being paid $50 for six hours work, (it maybe the case somewhere in the industry), then it isn't the minimum wage and standard set in Australia.

I believe that the Admin Fees for each TAB and non-TAB meeting are $3800 and $3200 respectively, so one would think that dedicated workers could receive more than $50 for six hours work and have a case against their employer. Notwithstanding the standards and monies paid, if they are being paid or not paid, the industry still requires voluntary help, but there needs to be a definitive line to distinguish the two.

Hypothetically, if a club operated a non-TAB meeting with $3200 to use per meeting and had six staff, the cost for labour could be:

6 x 6hrs x $22p/h = $792

It's just a rough example. What happens to the other $2408 ?

If staff were being paid $50 per six hours that equals $300. What happens to the other $2900 ?

P.S. I'm not suggesting that clubs don't need and use the monies, but it appears to me there might be enough to cover wages. However, I haven't taken into consideration insurance, possibly superannuation, etc.

P.S.S. Looking at the other end of the spectrum and we are wasting a lot of monies with the establishment of GWIC and employing a Deputy CEO which is a significant cost to the industry, amounting to millions of dollars.

Great information. Thanks everyone.

Also the weekly amount in the ad was wrong. It is $8.70 a week not $12.

Remember to PM me if you want anymore details about how to join the union.

Now, we just need someone to interpret them and provide a typical example of a race day or week for either a TAB or non-TAB club

Typical TAB

Position Hours Required
Bar 5
Canteen 6 (2 people)
Lure Driver 6
Starter 6
Kennel Supervisor 6.5
Kennel ID 6
Kennel Attendants 6 (4 people)
Ticket Office 6
Judge 5
Race Caller 4
Cleaners 5 (2 people)
Curator 10
Admin 6
Licensee 8

NB: Penalty Rates apply for weekends - The admin fee paid is a static contribution whether the club is racing on weekdays, weekends and or public holidays.

Theoretically bar, licensee and canteen staff should be self funding.

When Calculating the REAL cost, don't forget that in addition to hourly rates payable, there must be an allowance included for Power, Water, Ground, Plant and Building Maintenance Insurance Public Liability and Workers Comp, Training and advertising!

How much money would a Tab Club make as Net and Gross Profit and how much rent would they pay ?

I know of one non-Tab club that made $500 net profit per meeting at the canteen.

I have knowledge through a user of a race track for trialling purposes that the track is a gold mine (his words not mine).

So, do tracks make a profit ? Do they all pay correct wages ?

Hi Mark and all others , Bob Glover here,, Firstly lets put a few things straight that seem to be getting overlapped a little, There is difference between TAB and non TAB tracks in the wage make up of a large proportion ?? The Tab tracks get a larger admin distribution $$ than what has been put forward here, and most of the non Tab tracks are staffed by, a majority of voluntary staff both race day and trailing, Now only recently GRNSW released figures of expected payments to the different staff positions on future tab clubs race meets, have n't sen any more of these as yet ?? But as we know that as expected more Tab maybe expected meets to replace some others staff will be looking to these larger figures , no doubt? Every post we all read on data points virtually to a similar direction , more :EXPOSURE: that is PROMOTION , To cut in short how many of us reneged on the extra $21 for Sky 2. I know it was more people than you would think ? So GRNSW rely entirely on Sky for the promotion of our sport ?? Even Thoroughbreds woke up to the pulse , slowing ? They have gone better putting free to air racing , 7 days 7 nights with, good after hrs shows/interviews/replays and what ever else they can put that does Promote, cheaply because of the adds/ promotion of products etc, etc, What a good/great way of showcasing our product to not only to participants and public but future generations to come, does not cost much at all, Sponsors/Products, $$ Some channels can sell step ladders/ vacuum cleaners all day?? Secondly I am repeating myself again ,live streaming non Tab races online would be a great boost both for financial benefits to the clubs, as we would be drawing betting and public interest. I know because I am a member of sailing clubs that put it on Sat/Sun weekly from the Harbour direct from a run/ about chasing 18ft skiffs around the course on the Harbour, as well I have stated Capalabar do it and show their replays on our The Dogs site, Funny how our own Country dont get the same support, When I have put to our PTB {we will look into that} when?? Again at risk of repeating myself, and what many have stated when you get the chance to have any say we must push, / urge whatever it takes to these new Top appointments that they must ,to move any way forward ,with our industry, start at the top and work through all dept,s in the GRNSW and clean out driftwood and wastage ,non performers , these are really not doing anyone any good at , how can commissioners etc get on top of our problems with so many behind them not worth their weight?? Has anybody seen the new licence fees ? alot of rumors ,?? I know that all is balancing on a knife,s edge with state election next March?? Bob Glover

This is just an update for those of you who wanted to know what the AWU could do for them before joining.

The AWU reached out to GWIC and will be having a meeting with them to discuss some of the issues in the industry.

I think this is a positive first step in opening dialogue between participants (through the AWU) and the new body that will regulate racing after July. This will hopefully lead to participants having a greater say in changes that will be made before they come into effect.

Whilst, as always, I am happy to hear any suggestions/complaints from participants, this meeting has been organised on behalf of AWU members so the best way to make sure that your voice is heard would be to join the AWU.

Carly,
Good on AWU for this initiative.
Many people will be watching closely.
Depending on how they approach it, what extent the GWIC take on AWU concerns, and how the industry is informed and included will determine whether participants join AWU in numbers or not.
It could be quite interesting...will soon find out.
