Sandro,

Re "Actually Packy Keeping has put in several good runs in the past".

Actually no. All its 14 wins have either been in the bush in NSW or in slow to moderate times in town. The best would have been 42.27 at Wenty last year but most have been much slower. In other words, none of its wins have been within a bull's roar of record time.

I just hope they double checked the Shepparton record run and did not time the bunny. It would not be the first time.

By all means give it credit for paying for its feed. Many don't do that. But let's not kid ourselves either. That Shepparton time was totally out of character.

Meanwhile, after the poor last at Sandown it followed up in another 7 days with a slow 2nd at Ballarat (38.43 - record 37.56 or 13 lengths quicker). That's pretty typical of its history.

Incidentally, is it a coincidence that the thoroughbreds have a similar problem with stayers? The vast majority of long races are made up of imported horses. And is it a coincidence that the proportion of sub-400m greyhound races continues to increase?

Bruce, shes a temperamental back marker. I would bet my cahoonies that she would trial close to track record times. Ability is there, she chooses her time to show it.

No point arguing with someone who doesn't understand.

Cant compare the horse situation to the greyhounds. We don't import stayers, only tough USA bloodlines.

Also there is good money for stayers. It's the breeders and trainers that dont want to embrace the time, money and effort to develop them

In fairness to Bruce, on interview Rob Britton did mention that

'if stayers raced week in, week out"

they can't always back up those premium performances. (or words to that effect)

No athlete can't as those performances are supreme efforts

However, when they are in peak fitness and mental state they can back up and perform for a period of time until the efforts take the toll. Each dog's tolerance to this is different. It's up to the trainer to know his/her dog.

Tornado Tears definitely has a high cruising rate, what a run last night. To take care of those dogs in that fashion just shows you how much talent he really has.

Sandro, agree and all that makes sense.
If you take it a step further I'm sure you will find that the stats for stayers would be similar for record runs over 300, 400, 500, 600 metre runs...they are all flesh and bone.

TT just runs the times better...most champs do.

Tornado tears broke the record in a 8 dog field after that he broke the record in a 4 dog field. First run at Albion was a look 2nd run was a tune up, 3rd run in my opinion was him normally comfortable with the track. if he had a 4th run in my opinion the time he would run would be next level! champions\freak that's what he is, will always deliver those quality displays of brilliance.

Thankyou Sandro but it matters little what I think. In this case I am talking only about what has actually happened over the past decade - ie times, plus a sensible allowance for unusual conditions on the night. (NB it is normal for clubs to manicure the track on feature nights).

Tornado has now franked its virtual record at Sandown with a terrific run at Albion. This is exceptional. Rippin Sam did what he always does - come from a modest start to equal previous performances. That type of racer often does (eg Sweet It Is) as they don't use up quite so much petrol early. Jalapeno could not maintain its form of 7 days ago. The remaining dog was outclassed.
Benali ran really well in a preliminary 710m but could not back up the next time.

The figures remain; two thirds can't, one third can.

As for Britton's "It's up to the trainer to know his/her dog", well sure. However, the repeated evidence is that they don't know or don't care, or are hoping for a miracle. After Xylia Allen broke the Wenty record, PAW said she was the greatest thing since sliced bread. 7 days later in the final, she collapsed like a pricked balloon on the home turn.

By the way, for the full truth on Packey Keeping go to the thread under that name. I am not allowed to mention it here.

Brilliant return to racing last night to land the G1 Zoom Top

Awesome training performance by Rob and his team to get the dog fit enough to win first up after such a long lay off

Brilliant dog and win. I cant recall a training effort that has delivered a group 1 after a five month lay off first up. Great respect to the team who charted his return and condition to get him ready for the race.

Watching him live last night, it's just amazing to see how easy he does it and how economical his stride is

It was like poetry in motion

Hats off to Tornado Tears, it's a record that will stand for a long time imho
