I know everyone has different standards and costs, but i have a simply question.

Quite possibly the cheapest way to get a 3mth old pup to the track and debut at 21 mths old is to rear yourself, transport yourself, breakin yourself, pretrain yourself and pay any incidentil cost yourself.

For those that have the capacity to do everything themselves, what would it cost you to from 3mth to 21mths per pup ?

I've just completed this exercise Anthony, doing everything myself as I've done before. The dog never left my premises & the following is a guess-a-ment but close to the mark....give n take a little here & there.

700m of quality meat per day = $4.20 x 487 days (3 months to 19 months) = $2045

150 grams per day of quality kibble = 5 bags = $650

Brisket Bones, Chicken frames = 0.40 cents per day (average) = $195.

Flee treatment, Advantix = $100.

Worm treatment, Drontral = $150.

Heartworm treatment = $100.

Trialing tickets = $300.

Petrol = Can't put a price on.

Time & effort which was a daily affair = Can't put a price on.

Total = $3540 + petrol, time & effort.

Thanks Steve

Assume you broke in for 4-5 weeks at no charge and had 3-4 months pretraining, so you saved on these 2 big ticket items ???

Anthony, I start box work at 6 weeks (yes I have DVD's). A 3-year-old child could box this dog by simply taking off the collar & telling him a command.

I start break-in at 12 months which went for 7 months. Obviously, over a very slow process with plenty of breaks in between...It works for me.

A 4/5 week Pre-training course doesn't exist as it basically happens every day with "Hands-on" training. Fitness is not a problem & the dog is never "Pushed".

Blackhawk Puppy. Try it Mal. Personal I prefer mine with BBQ sauce.

That's why I said "give n take a little here & there".
You'll be surprised just how much a pup will eat when your feeding twice a day Mal for the first six months.

Every kibble that actually contains only the meat they advertise on the bag is minimum $100 , every bag I have researched that is under $100 actually contains all meats e.g. Lamb beef chicken even though it advertises only one of these !
Check the ingredients on the bag , by law all the cheap bags have to list these meats as when they are made so poorly , everything and anything goes in them !
Advance is the cheapest at around $90 on special ! That only contains the meat that is advertised on bag ! Then it's upwards to $145 for meals for muts ! With many others ranging in between these 2 prices
Go to any outlet and check the ingredients and get the person who works there to explain and show you how to research a bag of kibble correctly !
You'll be shocked and disgraced at 80% of them !
What pups don't eat around 700 grams meat /chicken mince for added fat intake
They eat more then race dogs ! They are running and playing at 5.00 am for hours and are last to stop at 9.00 pm
They need more fuel !
Steve you are spot on as a min
You forgot vet and endless rugs or mats that get destroyed aswell
Added nutrients also
Oh and also that one spell of hot weather that they will endure when their in racing kennel with air con and you get a bill for over 1000 bucks for the quarter !

Because dogs eat meat that's needed in volume greater then what is supplied in kibble and I use kibble to get other nutrients that I don't have time to prepare in cooking or chopping up vegetables! E.g. Sweet potato ,garlic etc
They both serve different purposes Malcolm , I'm sure your aware

Not having a go at anyone or anyone's liking on use !
Only stated the factual truth about kibble !
Each to their own , the question was asked
"What kibble is $130 "
I answered , there is plenty ..... and there is a reason for this price
Do not take it personally on what each person prefers
In doing breakfast this morning I also forgot on the list is special formaulated animal infant milk powder also ....(profelac shepherd $80)

Cheers and good luck to all and pups

I did the sums a couple of years ago. For feed, worming and tick treatments it worked out at $33.50 per week. For memory that was using kibble valued at $50 for 20kg and $2.75kg for meat.

worked out costs of rearing 1 pup and came up with about $1500.00
using the prices I pay for supplies and feeding the same as a race dog
so no cheap meats and supplementing the meat with chicken mince for the Extra fat that pups need
People seem to think that if you pay 2 or 3 times the price for something that it is much better than the cheaper stuff but that is not always the case

So final figure would be between $3000 & $3500 per dog...

PET MOTEL next door to me always full, $38.00 A DAY large dogs,
small dogs $28.00 A DAY.

At that rate the cost for one year would be $13,870.00.
STRANGE THAT I NEVER SEE GREYHOUNDS THERE?

I started to add up what it cost to rear for a couple of weeks and then threw the book and pen away it frightened me. I think that's how we lose a lot of people from the industry when they start adding up the cost. All I can say is it aint cheap . Cheers Ted.
