Just watching RGPTV tonight someone txt in saying that they heard that this will be the last year star sports will be sponsoring the derby.!! I wonder why the thought might cross his mind whilst towester do their upmost to lead the industry in relation to welfare facilities for owners trainers and punters, there are take out merchants who are not paying their fair share namely betfair, sky sports, paddy power and each night betfair / exchange prices are flashed up for each race and mentioned by the commentators.

the impression I got off Julie and hobbsey was that whilst the derby a few years ago was worth 250k and it's now worth 175 that if star sports pulled out and the prize money dropped a bit it would not be the end of the world.!!!!!!

Surely towester needs to be supported to the hilt and the derby needs to be as prestiges as ever.

RGPTV should facilitate discussions on this matter as we need a unified front going into the future owners trainers bookies

Didn't see RPGTV discussing ongoing Derby sponsorship. It is though misleading to highlight the winners prize, it is the sponsors overall prize fund that tells the true story. The 1st prize in 2015 was indeed 250k sponsored by William Hill, though that highlight 1st prize was at the expense of all other prize money for finalist etc. In 2016 WH increased their sponsorship pot to over 300K, with a fairer distribution

"In the prize money restructure, there have been increases across the board for all the heats, with greyhounds reaching the second round guaranteed to win their entry fee back by combined first and second round also-ran money of 250. Third round winners receive 550 equivalent to most one-off Open race prizes on Sky. Quarter-Finalists win 1,000 (more than four times last years prize of 225) and Semi-Finalists win 3,000, the equivalent to winning the richest one-off Opens or a Category Two competition.

The winners prize will now be 150,000. The second is 20,000, third 15,000, fourth 12,500, fifth 11,000 and sixth 10,000. Greyhounds reaching the final will win a minimum of 12,000 in total (minimum if qualifying through each round without winning and coming sixth in the final).

When Towcester were granted a 5 year deal as the new Derby venue, they pledged a prize of 175,000 for the winner of the 2017 Greyhound Derby as part of its five-year 1.75 million package. Which equates to 350k per year. There has been an increased Derby sponsorship purse at Towcester which will be maintained throughout their 5 year deal & hopefully beyond

Thought it was a 3 year deal, whatever, there wasn't a queue lining up, thanks to Star Sports.
It is getting harder and harder to get the big sponsors.

If I remember correctly John Star Sports signed a 3 year sponsorship deal & Towcester have a 5 year deal to host the Derby. I really can't see it going elsewhere as long as Towcester is still in business.
