there will be a big turn out I would suggest there will be many AA there but not thinking like AA for the day. what we must realise is AA have an impossible hope of shutting down the thoughbreds but what we have to keep bringing to the front is horses kill jockeys track work riders and stable hands not to mention the ones left with major problems from being confined to wheel chairs to spending their life on disability pensions The dogs don't do this. the horses have a overbreeding problem WASTAGE and kill as many horses every year as we were killing dogs. They are not to be allowed to push it under the carpet VLandys drew attention to us so he is open for attack. If then we go to cruelty nothing is worst than smashing horses knee caps to claim insurance, using jiggers, spurs and drugging horses the list is long but we need to draw attention to their short fallings when we are attacked by them(Vlandy's) what is happening is obvious to see they have a leader who stands up, cover up and protects their industry I am afraid we do not have this luxury our people draw attention to our short falls. There is one thing that we can do and that is sing to our self the rhyme (THE PEOPLE UNITED WILL NEVER BE DEFEATED) nothing is more true but it takes commitment. Sorry for my ramble but I also suffer from the Discrimination the bias reporting and the rest of the wrongs being imposed on us.

Brett,

It is very easy for naysayers to pluck out, or emphasise, any supposed negatives in a story. The ABC and SMH are past masters at this where it suits their anti-racing theme. The Greens' Faruqi will whip them on if they forget.

The latest effort highlighted racetrack injuries (Sun Herald July 15) as fed to them by Faruqi. For balance, they might have included the thousands of injuries suffered on football fields every weekend, many of which are featured in major articles in the same paper. They could start with the several pages devoted to NSW captain Cordner's calf, or to Billy Slater's hamstring.

Anyone for banning football?

Relevant article on the ABC's (ambivalent or just biased?) approach to animal welfare in racing by Andrew Rule in today's Herald Sun, but a subscriber only article.

There was an article by Miranda Devine from the Daily Telegraph that presented an alternative view (ie greyhound racing supportive) to the mainstream media in the period after the ban was announced.

At least there are some reporters who will present an alternative view to unbalanced reporting by the sensationalist mainstream media.

Does anyone want me to have a shot at going to the Press Council?

It does mean a bit of background work on the articles, but if there's merit (which on face value there is), I have the resources to give it a proper shot.

Ross,
For a thick-head like me, could you explain what that entails and what is the objective?

Cheers.

Michael

Despite being promoters & operators of greyhound racing, not one State regulator has made the media accountable, which most would agree come within the responsibilities of a promoter & operator.

In this vacuum, the objective of independent action would be for the ABC to provide balanced reporting.

An example of what can be achieved follows; being a statement by the SSAA Vic in respect of unbalanced reporting by the Herald-Sun.

Herald Sun caught out
Australias highest-circulating daily paper, the Herald Sun, has been brought to heel for lazy and biased journalism after SSAA Victoria took a stand against the papers attack on reputable firearms organisations in a story last year.

SSAA Victoria takes a stand
The Australian Press Council found the Herald Sun had published misleading material without reasonable fairness or balance and had not taken steps to provide adequate remedial action, contravening three of the General Principles in its Standards of Practice.
The action relates to a story published by the Herald Sun in June last year, which painted the firearms organisations and the firearms industry as social media trolls and sinister recruiters of disaffected young men in print and online.

This is how to take on the negative press and this bloke SEBASTIAN GORKA made the ABCs ELLEN FANNING look as silly as she really is. (lol)

Is there anybody in greyhound racing that has the ability and strength of him to say it as it really is...She was taken so off guard that she had to keep looking down at her written notes all the time!!!

The GBOTA wont because theyve assisted the Government and authorities that has led to the current status of the Industry such as Reform Panel Recommendations, Alliance Guarantees and tracks sitting dormant for five months. What could they have done ?

OK Ross, got it.
Should you have a go?...Abso bloody mutely!!!!
I think every participant would be very grateful.
Thank you.
What is sad is it takes a participant and not a body responsible for promotion and protection of the industry to take an initiative.
Good on you, Ross.
Perhaps the people who SHOULD be doing it might get the message.

I think that would be a great move Ross as these people will stop at nothing to shut us down . They have now changed their tact from wastage , which was shot down , to the suitability of greyhounds as pets for the general public . Their agenda is to close us down with whatever propaganda they can get into the public domain which is now changing to the nature of the breed to adapt to life outside racing , which if allowed to continue unabated could have an affect on the amount of dogs re-homed , which is exactly what they are hoping for .

Michael....some of the people that SHOULD be doing this helped create the wastage myth , some of the people that SHOULD be doing this respect and admire some of our fiercest critics who continue to put out false information into the print and social media trying to whip the antis into another frenzy so I wouldn't be holding my breath waiting for these same people to get on the front foot and defends us or the greyhounds

Ross,

Dawson is a major proponent of better socialisation - and, I believe, said so in the previous Borsak Parliamentary Inquiry. So, for that matter, was WDA. I don't think anyone has basically disagreed with the theme, so far as I can tell.

That said, I would seriously doubt that the Press Council would be of much help. There are enough little snippets here and there for her to claim that she presented a fairly wide picture, that she is an "expert", and that other views were included in the article.

To me, the issue here is not whether the industry would win a significant battle (more likely the nasty bits would just get greater publicity), but that the industry has not created a stronger base case in the first instance.

For example, it should be offering stories about good socialisation amongst other aspects of husbandry. Expanded stories about GAP experience is one avenue. Quotes from official vets, too. Plus, as I keep saying, the more pictures of mum and the pups the better. Expanded stories about how soft tissue injuries are managed would help - especially in contrast to the pooch in the backyard.
Another example would be the high-rating SBS/UK program on the Fitzgerald Supervet where intricate repairs are done on injured household pets - ie all dogs get ill or injured.

It will never be easy because bad news always gets a better run than good news - but it must be done anyway.

Proactive is always better than reactive.
