peter, i understand what your saying id say its not profitable at this stage , but we should give it at least 12/18 months , gotta give credit for trying new things ,,

and if this gap/ rehoming progaramme dosen't keep going the industry is in trouble , as you would know there is more and more young greyhounds joining that programme, because of idiotic rules and regulations

Don't worry about the "cafe". Sandown is about to unleash "indian casino racing to Australia". A few greedy ,quick buck opportunist's(the names will be familiar to all) are about to visit the American experience upon us. Contract racing!! breed , rear, race " casino dogs". Big money is up for grabs for greedy and short sighted opportunism. When it inevitably fails the con merchants walk away with a motza, leaving a trail of destruction and a non viable future. The "SANDOWN CANIDROME " is coming.!!!! Think MACAU???

The GAP cafe is an attempt to introduce greyhounds to the public in a novel way.

Its performance needs to be considered by means other than just financial, in this case its strategic value.

It may not appeal to all as the best way to handle this , but I give credit to GRV for taking a positive step in making inroads into public perception.

Lets hope such baby steps are an indication of more to come in getting wider public acceptance.

Ross i agree 100% but lets say it bleeds out 500k ....or even over 1 million as projected

500K to a mill.... i think a better way to spend this kind of bucks would be to develop a schools and retirement home programs ...

This enables us to share our experience of Kennel to home ...

Dogs for Life .

Establish Sky racing adds and TV adds ......Show how we care for our dogs from birth ...

Show the family side of the industry because we do it so well ..

I don't see any real initiatives coming forth this way by the PTB or the CLUBS but i do see a very greedy deal unfolding and that can only contain DISASTER for all of us .

Fair enough I appreciate your passion Ross

Speak from your mind and people will hear you with their mind.
Speak from your heart and people will hear you with their heart.

Leave safety behind. Put your body on the line.
Stand before the people you fear and speak your mind even if your voice shakes.
When you least expect it, someone may actually listen to what you have to say.

Well-aimed slingshots can topple giants.

I think a major part of the demise of the cafe is its location, foot traffic is limited and is really only looked at by thousands of people as they drive by each day.

A wise person once said to me Ross

"Some people say "something is better than nothing, sometimes nothing is better"

Someone has mentioned what Sandown is doing, American model, inexperienced amateur's, huge investment. They are missing the final part of the puzzle....in America they have a huge amount of adoption orgs, dogs go from racing kennels to these adoption orgs. The adoption orgs then work with the dogs to de tune them from racing and support them to the life after racing.

Considering the false and misleading wastage figure's provided by GA, that were then used by GRV to promote the overbreeding myth, which now has come to bite them on the bum, helping Trainers and owners in the American style would be a no brainer, but I guess you must have a brain first.

I, myself am looking after 5 retired dogs, we have rehomed most of our dogs through GAP, but if they fail back home they come. So the burden, financial and otherwise remains.

GRV are not open and transparent, like most of our greyhound authorities around the country they never take responsibility for their mistakes, which means you never learn from them. I guess the price we pay for having a Govt run industry and why so many other Industries have been privatised.

Come November we have a chance to correct the process back to the one that Denis Napthine started.
