I was trialling tonight at Wenty Park and they had markings on the track for where it looks like the 520m boxes are going to be moved to. It looks like it will become about 500m or 505m.

I don't remember hearing anywhere that the sprint distance at Wentworth Park was going to be shorter. Surely this is something that participants should get some input into, rather than just reading a press release that it is going to happen in a week's time.

Seems odd as well they would shorten it before the million dollar race when some of the info that has already gone out says Wentworth Park 520m.

Has anybody else heard anything about this?

Carly,

Par for the course. We will tell you what's good for you.

"Remedial works" could mean anything.

NB 36 hours ahead, OzChase still shows the Wed meeting at WPK, Nationals included.

Bulldozer. Knock the joint down and move to Richmond or Fairfield on land that can be industry owned.

Saw the markings on the track and the talk amongst participants was they were being moved forward.

I have heard nothing official, which is why I thought I would check on here whether anyone had heard anything about distance changing.

I mentioned fairfield probably 2 years back unfortunately plans have been approved to build something else. I live locally and remember seeing in our paper.

See below from Fairfield City Council site.

Council has endorsed works to redevelop the showground into a modern sporting and cultural hub for high level sports, community cultural festivals and major events.

The redevelopment aims to open the showground more to the community by providing facilities and programs relevant to the community while being regional significant.

Stage 1 works will include:

International size football field and all weather synthetic field includes grading and clearing, turfing, synthetic grass and base, line markings, goal posts, scoreboard/screen, irrigation, field lighting and fencing.

Lighting upgrade for international size football field includes 4 x 45m poles with lights at 750 lux level and fittings and cables to allow expansion to 1750 lux (digital video quality)

Festival and events area and an AFL/Cricket field

Amenities facilities
Open sided stage with roof over
Awning area for festivals (1,500sqm)
Mound/tiered stadium seating between sporting fields

I said years ago they should move to Richmond and put another track inside the other one like the old Harold park track where they have already marked it out years ago and the pegs are still in the ground today and they could race there at least five days a week and if they put a straight track there they could race there seven days a week but that would be to smart for the powers to be to think that far a head and get rid of wentworth park it is to hard to get to and it is a lost cause make the move to Richmond and make easier for every one in the industry.

Maybe they are moving the winning post to accommodate for the box movement.

Doubt that. Imagine the cost of re-signing judge's tower and cameras.

If its only five metres, why should they bother ? No division of science could argue that five metres would do much for the dogs at WP.

Apparently the changes are coming out of the UTS report. The UTS report showed that there was less interference from the 720m start than the 520m start so they are replicating the 720m start for the 520m. The 720m start has a shorter run to the first turn.

A few issues I noticed when reading the report.

1. They mention only 2 injuries from the 280m but do not say how many races were run over 280m. We all know there wouldn't be many so they are effectively comparing 720m races with 520m races.
2. There seems to be no consideration given for the difference in the type of dogs that race over 720m and race over 520m and what impact that may have on first turn interference.
3. In the recommendations it talks of box positioning etc but doesn't specifically mention the distance to the first turn. When I read it I assumed they just wanted a shute-like start and wider on the track not a shorter run to the turn.
4. The avg starters for the 720m races was 7 and for the 520m 7.7. In other sections of the report they acknowledge reduced fields as a factor in interference but it does not seem to have been taken into account when looking at the difference between the 520m and 720m boxes.
5. The report seems to suggest that they want to change the 520m boxes as a trial to gather data. The metropolitan track should not be used as an experiment.

Where? It is house city out there these days. Had a chance previously to buy El Caballo Blanco back around 15 years ago for $4 million and it was shot down.
