Any ideas on what to do with this fella

Schooled in no prob
Done 3 qualifying trials at different tracks no prob passing dogs to win trials
Stopped after that at unofficial trials and now won't go unless there is a dog in with him and won't pass.
Will trial on his own at schooling track and will give 100%
Will follow drag 100%

If you haven't already done so, & provided you have them, lead him onto the arm & let him grab & bite it all the way around the track (this will take more out of him than a trial or race) then about 3 or 4 days later trial him at the same track on his own with a finish on to the lure. Good luck Kevin.

Kevin there doesn't seem to be a logical reason for this except if I'm reading this correctly (?) the dog appears to chase when you switch tracks? Have you tried switching? Alternatively is there a difference in the hare between tracks. Is he chasing one design and not the other?

Hey Kevin, I think sometimes that you may need to do the opposite than what you want him to do to try and get into his head. If you can or if they allow you, take the dog to a trialling track and get as close to the action as allowable. Hopefully after a few trials he will get keen. You must watch him closely as you dont want him to get over keen or sick of the exercise. If hes showing that he wants to go then take him home. Repeat this a couple of times then the next time give him a lead on to the lure and drag him a bit. Then take him
off the lure and get them to run it right round and when it comes back around then slip him onto and give him a run on after 100,150. Use the same technique and slowly lengthen run on . Can try and add a dog for competition as he knows hes going to catch it but must keep an eye on your dog for any bad signs. JMO Cheers 🍻

Sorry I misunderstood this bit 'Done 3 qualifying trials at different tracks'.

If it was me I'd keep taking him to the track and just let him stand around. I wouldn't try him at all until he's got used to being taken there. Might take quite a few visits but eventually the penny should drop.

Kevin
Take him to race track and hand slip him with a older dog 3 or 4 times before putting him in traps again ,then put something in with him when you do trap him again .do you know Kevin when dogs chase cars its always a older one who teaches them ,maybe he knows there is a big sofa somewhere waiting for him .lol. good luck with him and Ihope to see you with him in Limerick racing ,,,

Hi Kevin

First I wish u luck in your endeavours and patience,as this is what its going to take a lot of

Heres a few ideas to rewire his head and install some much needed confidence

He has until Xmas so here is a 8 week programme and at worst at the end of it youll have a fit and well rounded happy dog .

Theres a few variables Im not aware of so Im aware any of what I write could be thrown away instantly eg kennel mates , your park or access to drag lures etc

Firstly you need to install confidence in his head and deliver encouragement
Take him away from the track for 2 weeks and take him free galloping with a smaller bitch that he actually likes and has fun with and can actually dominate a little
When u do this take his fav toy that he enjoys ripping to shreds
At different moments throw it on the ground and let him have fun
All you want to see is a will to get it and show off in front of you and the bitch and a tail that should be up and proud

Every 3rd day take him out walking around Poeple
And ask anyone that passes to give a rub and pat , do this by himself not with his friend ! He needs all the attention

Do this for 2 or 3 weeks if have to , until you see a change in his head space
The first week will be the worst in terms of results

Now you need to step it up and test him on a straight run behind a drag lure by himself that he finishes on with and has some fun and encouragement!

For this 2 weeks do 2 straight drag lure runs per week over 200-300 mtr
But let his bitch mate that he has been hanging out with go first and let him watch and get revved up before his turn .

In between these runs remember still go walking around Poeple and parks to get pats and encouragement and to relax

So 5 weeks has passed and hes ready to take a look at track again ,NOT have a go but to have a look !

Where I am based our straight track for training is at the track , so we can walk around the track when no racing or trials are being held
I am not sure what your circumstances are so hard to offer this part

But week 6 you want to take him with his bitch mate to the track where you are going to trial him and just walk him around when there is zero Poeple and noise
Let him and his mate just do their thing and relax
Do this twice a week for 2 weeks at the same time still doing 2 straight drag lure runs
With finish ons !
Remember these drag lure runs are to be done by himself ! Singular
Not cars and motor bikes ! He needs to focus on a lure and dominate it and most importantly ENJOY it !

Week 8 last week , still doing 2 drag lure runs that hes been watching his bitch mate go first , in between these runs , take them both to track and if you can organise your times of trials , go LAST trial , less Poeple ,less Dogs and a better chance of him focusing and relaxing

This part is to just let him bite on , not sure if you guys have this procedure?but let the bitch go first so he watches as usual and all they are doing is watching the lure come to them and you slip them on to it and they should only walk with it for 5-10 mtrs
Take him away

Then he is ready for a singular box jump or hand slip on track over 300 whilst still taking him free galloping with his bitch and having fun

At the end of the day , if he aint happy and confident..... he isnt going to do a thing
Let alone do it at his full potential and beyond

The idea of all this is to rewind and take everything back to being simple and enjoying it for him !

Good luck mate
Let us know at Xmas , he will either be unwrapping presents with you or getting ready to performance trial !
Either way you gave him every opportunity to thrive ,thats all you can do

Good post Nathan(and Michael Worth).

A lot of people take it for granted that "all" greyhounds should chase hard. This is not the case just like obedience training any other breed of dog. Some are naturals and some are not.

This is what makes a good trainer from an average one.
Some dogs need to be taught what to do just like teaching a dog to sit or fetch a ball.
Yes, when they are happy and trying to please their master they will show their full potential.

Unfortunately, a lot of trainers want dogs to be ready to go when they get them into their kennels. I firmly believe there are a lot of gifted trainers out there that would be a lot more successful if they had the right dogs to train.

Kevin, you didn't answer my previous post. Are you allowed to race dogs in blinkers over there ?

To keep him focussed and not worrying about other dogs, which, theoretically, he cannot see as he gets near them. It's like horses racing with blinkers on. It has worked on many dogs here with a tendency to not race truly. It was just a thought, so are you allowed to use them ?
