I retired from full-time training a few years ago and have now moved to the NSW Central Coast.

I have a lot of experience in the breeding, rearing and training of greyhounds and happy to provide advice etc to any owners or trainers that think I could be of some assistance to.

I am really keen to help out or provide some advice to any new or inexperienced participants.

Cheers, Brian

Brian

That is a wonderful thing you are doing.

Have you also ever thought of being a greyhound property "baby sitter". By that I mean, moving in to look after a greyhound property while the property owners take a well earned holiday for a week or two.
I have always thought there would be a wonderful market for such an experienced person as yourself to undertake this position (paid obviously).

Regards

Cheers David. We are caravanners these days but had never thought about looking after greyhounds short term. Interesting thought as it could help us fund some more sight seeing around the country.

Happy these days to try and help anyone with my thoughts on diet, exercise, training program etc.

If anyone is interested they can send me a private message

its always hard to get away from a greyhound property ,, its also hard to get people to house sit for you because when you mention numbers people who arn't experienced with greyhounds get frightened as most are used to just minding a few house pets ,

we have used house sitters a few times , last time was this time last year, when we went to qld for six weeks they done an excellent job yet were not experienced with greyhounds , we dont train or race so i guess that makes it easier ,,

a few years earlier we went to ireland for three months and got sitters from qld george and ros Holburn who were traveling around Australia at the time , and were happy to drop into vic even though in was the middle of winter , George didnt mind as he was stationed in canberra for a few years whilst in the services so was used to the cold ,

they were experienced with the greyhounds as they were owners before ,

while they were here George took out his trainers license again and we kept a few dogs here and he and ROS trained many winners for us,

before they left us they brokein and pretrained our most successful litter ever Mogambo x Girl aloud all were winners ,

George and Ros came for three months and stayed with us for 3 years

they also came back a few years later and stayed for another 12 months ,

so id say there is opportunities out there to travel and help out along the way , and earn a few dollars as well

You could have told me you were in Qld Mick. I would have taken a weeks holiday & you could have looked after the joint lol.

Nice offer Brian. If I was a young fellow keen on gathering experience, I'd look you up.

Cheers, Steve

Thanks Sandro. I'm pretty sure some of my ideas would be of value to someone looking for different ways to hopefully improve their results.

Here's a thought for those in charge at Greyhound Data.

Start a topic with Brian on 'ASK THE TRAINER"
That way, Brian could give his thoughts/replies and we could all get the benefit of his many, many years of success as he endeavours to help those starting out

Here's a starter for Brian ... what was your feeding routine for racing dogs in your kennel?

Dave, my feeding program changed very much over the years a x if anyone is interested in the detail they can PM me and we can arrange to have a chat. Basically I didn't feed kibble but probably more meat than most and I added a lot of fresh vegetables. I also split fed my team with same food morning and night and at lunch time if racing that night. There were a couple of minor differences between the meals. I always fed semi lean meat to racing dogs and the consistency of the meat is essential so you need to find a quality provider. That's the overall strategy I used. Cheers Brian

As a general rule I did not use any additives or supplements other than as required following blood tests etc. I found that if you fed your dogs quality food and kept them fit and worm free you dont need to use these expensive items on a regular basis. I was a big fan of electrolyte drinks after racing or trialling and gave my dogs bones on a regular basis. Oh yes I always added sardines in oil into the meal 3 times a week. Again if anyone needs more info please PM me. Cheers Brian

Thank you to those that have contacted me so far. I really hope that I have been able to provide you with information that you find interesting and that may end up being be of some assistance to you.

Buying race dogs vs buying pups is always an interesting topic, as is diet and training and racing programs.

Very happy to talk to anyone about any aspect of greyhound racing especially those just starting out or thinking about getting involved
