********* PRESS RELEASE REGARDING PROPOSED LIFFORD GREYHOUND STADIUM CLOSURE **********************

Greyhound owners and trainers in the Northwest have called an emergency meeting in a bid to save Lifford Stadium.

The last ever meeting at the Lifford track is set to take place Saturday August 17th.

The owners of Lifford Stadium, the Duffy family from Derry, say they’ve been left with no choice but to close the facility because of a lack of financial support from the Irish Greyhound Board.

The IGB say they regret the proposed closure, but they say they have supported the privately owned track over the years as much as they could.

The track, which has been opened for sixty years in the border town, employs up to 40 people, and will be a huge blow to the local area.

The emergency meeting will take place in the Fir Trees Hotel in Strabane on at 7pm on Wednesday 14th August.

All local greyhound owners and trainers are asked to attend.

While TD’s and local Cllrs are also asked to attend the meeting.

Hollow words from the Indecon guy about looking at the IGB footprint and the importance to the rural economy. How does that sit with leaving one track,Dundalk, to serve the interests of owners, trainers and breeders across most of the country north of Dublin and the border counties?
How does it sit with IGB's remit under the Greyhound Racing Industry Act to promote greyhound racing in Ireland? ie. all of Ireland not just the southern end of the country.

And Ian, Dundalk is also a private track, so the most northerly IGB investment is Mullingar.

Saturday 17th August 2019

Tonight’s race meeting is scheduled to be the last at Lifford Track. It’s going to be an emotional night for many of us as we reflect on the many memories we have gathered at Lifford over the years.

We must look to the future and aim to do all we can to get racing back on track at this awesome venue.

We will be appointing the Committee for the Northwest Greyhound Owners & Breeders Association (NWGOBA) at 7:20pm. Anyone interested in being part of the Committee or nominating someone for the Committee should make themselves available for the meeting which will be happening in the upper part of the stadium. This meeting will be short and is only for the purposes of appointing the Committee.

You can join the NWGOBA tonight by paying £5 (annual payment) to either Thomas Hasson or Tony Maxwell at the Track. The NWGOBA will be acting on your behalf and therefore it’s important you support them by paying your membership. Thank you.

Retired greyhounds, Son and Sally, will be in attendance with their owners Wendy and Dawn. Please ensure visitors to the track get the opportunity to meet them and get their photos taken with them if they wish.

Thanks to Track Lotto and the Racing Office, all winners will receive a trophy and have their photos taken on the podium at the centre of the track wearing the Lifford winner’s racing jacket.

Becca and myself will be available to take photos of the winners and of the people who attend tonight to compile a movie to share on social media.

Please inform anyone who uses social media that they can follow progress on the Lifford Supporters Group FB page.

This may be the end of an era, but we will continue to strive towards the creation of a new era of greyhound racing at Lifford.
