Hi guys. Need some advice. Have a lovely bitch at home and have been having fun getting her fit for racing. This morning I took her to Abernathy trial track for her first hit out from the 250m box. Lure went past, she jumped and then stopped. Looking for something. I put her in again with another dog and she chased hard. Ran well but behind other dog. Other dog is very fast I must say. So to me she isn't focused on the lure. Any suggestions on how to get her more focused on the lure. Cheers

definitely not chasing where was it broken in and what did they say about her
other than that take her to a good breaker to see if they can get her going in a bullring with a noise making lure
also don't run her with other dogs as you could be teaching her to chase dogs instead of the lure

Thanks Con. Yeah, I'll stop her running with other dogs mate. She is a bale dog. Waverly. She had 16 starts for a different trainer. Her replays suggest she isn't focused on the lure. I'll contact a reputable breaker. Cheers

Hi deon

Your could be waiting a good month if its a breaker worth going to
In the meantime you could get her ready or switched on yourself

Youll need a partner for this

But start with going to straight track ( she aint ready for race track) you stand in the sand pen at the beginning of the sand with squeaker on rope and a toy in other hand that squeaks like mad !
Get your partner to stand around 40-60 mtr away down the straight , start whirling the rope squeaker above your head and squeezing the toy in your hand !
Your partner shouldnt let go until shes wanting to go ! This will provoke or rev her up

As she comes half way start to run into sand letting the squeaker rope drag behind you
As she gets close to you swing it to the side away from your body and let her latch on

Fist time she might run around it and smell , its ok , its just the start
Shell run off back to partner all excited and not know whats going on , this is ok to
When she turns to refocus on you , repeat the above again

If she latches on be gentle , let her dominate and feel safe
Dont reach out to grab collar if she isnt latched on properly , she will run from you otherwise and lose all confidence in biting on

This technique is about short bursts concentration/high adrenaline and to have fun
Let her do this for 2 weeks every 3rd day

Then bring in another dog that is good at it and let them off together (with American muzzles)only one time !
She needs some bumps and also to see how its done by a pro , then back to by herself again .

In between these drills , let her free gallop in same straight track
But before you put her in , put the squeaky toy up in sand pen and then let her out
She should start to cotton on that there is something always waiting in sand pen to catch and chew !

The day she bolts to sand pen and grabs the toy and runs back to you with it in her mouth proud as punch is the day you can give your partner a rest as you dont need help anymore

After this just find someone with a bullring and go yourself
All your doing is slipping her onto the arm and then from the box once shes biting on arm from slips

Then when she jumps well from box and kills the arm shes ready to slip on track at the 500 boxes and finish on at catching pen(first turn ) and dragged down back straight biting on . From the 500 to first turn she will only cover around 140mtrs

Until she does this convincingly dont go further back

If she does do it well , keep stepping back distance and change from a finish on to just an into the pen run where your partner will be with a squeaker on a rope again

Good luck bud

Deon, you have only had her for a few days. Did her previous trainer say that she had been in season lately ?
Looking at her form, she could probably do with a spell, judging by the amount of starts she had so close together in June, July, and early August. She could be as flat as a tack.
Do you have her on any seasonal suppressant ? That can make a huge difference to some bitches, as it can make them sour.

Hey Deon, you could send her to Barry and Roz Evans up near Tamworth. Their add is in the business classifieds and they are very good. There is a cost of course but they have all the facilities and the time needed and have many years experience with these type of dogs. Cheers

Hi Carol. Thanks for your reply. Yes I totally agree with you. Way too many starts. I've had her for a month and have gone pretty easy on her as I believe she needed a break. She also had track leg which I have now sorted. I've been walking her and free galloping in the park. She is a lot fitter now and very healthy. I have put her on a seasonal tablet called orabolin. No idea if she has had a season.

Hi Michael. I have spoken to them and I'm prepared to send her to them. I just have to get her there. I definitely think it's worth a shot. I'm in Maitland. I'll work out a way mate.

Deon, the reason I asked about a season is that if she happens to be in her milk period, it can affect her adversely.
Also, she could be reacting to the suppressant, as many bitches lose interest in chasing when on it. We had a very quick bitch a while ago now, and we put her on a suppressant. She was a terrific chaser, but after she had it, she changed completely, lost interest in chasing, and when we brought her out of her kennel to run, she would turn around and want to go back to her bed. When we realised the problem and stopped it, she took several weeks to return to normal, but she did. Unusually bad reaction, but there are many bitches who do go sour and lose interest, so it may be something to consider. Good luck !
Ps. I replied to your PM, too.
