I have just started a couple of young dogs, i would like to know why do the graders at first give maidens after PTs the first race start and if they are lucky enough to win their next start they put them in the later races such as the 9th or 10th.
these are only just learning as we all know, to put them in late races to sit in the kennels for that long in my opinion is detrimental to them some one needs to advise the graders this can stress many of these young dogs to have a very adverse effect.
I know there may be some that it would not stress them too much but after talking to a lot of trainers they all have the same opinion that young pups need to gradually be placed in later racers?? What do others think.

Ellen I agree in most part that it is difficult for young dogs but getting sense out of graders is a whole other issue which I have given up on.They have a book of 300 excuses and pluck a different one to suit themselves.I have been for years taking pups to race meetings and kenneling them for the meeting duration that way they will learn.Even Wenty has the least experienced dogs in last races it the way most meetings get programmed.I feel your frustrations but dont rely on anyone helping u.

Its a great point you bring up Ellen
The states that have Novice class races such as Qld, SA, Tasmania (Juveniles) & WA generally have their maiden and novice races at the start of the program
I notice that Victoria, even though they don't have novices, they have Grades 7 & 6 races are generally near the start of the program
GRNSW have done some great things of late here in NSW but one thing they haven't done is protect young dogs
It is about time that these grades were introduced and that a general revamp of the grading took place to move not only dogs through their grades in a distance band but to encourage trainers to step their dogs up to higher distance bands

Your spot on Ellen & well within your rights to ask the question.
As Sandro has pointed out, some States have got it right...but to place a young dog that's had less than say 3 or 4 races in race 10 or 12 is totally right.
Graduation is the key.

Ellen, it has been a bug bear of mine for years!
With reference to NSW it is a crazy situation, in most or the majority of cases, the Maiden races are within the first two races programmed (Big Maiden races aside), this was always deemed to "protect" young dogs, however, you win your Maiden this week, next week that "protection" goes out the window as you are thrust into a Fifth grade that could easily be either race 10 or 11 on the programme - go figure?
So within a week, and merely by winning a race, your dog no longer needs "protecting", it has matured into a fully fledged "experienced" racing dog within the space of a week - go figure?

Could not agree more Ellen, apparently stress and hyper expectations that is part and parcel of all young racing dogs, is not considered here. I am sure, many a good young prospect has come down with acidosis related crampings aligned with excessive barking traits, and loss of stamina. It could be so easily fixed, but don't hold your breath!

This is a good thread & something well worth discussing with GRNSW &/or bringing to their attention via an email on their site.
It's something that trainers will realise but an administrator would/may not be aware of until it's brought to their attention & I feel they would appreciate the feedback.
I will email them but even better if a number of us do.

Thanks All for your replies my bitch was put into the last race in with experienced older dogs.
When i got her out seemed ok but when getting her mat etc after the race the mat was wet not Urine or water from the bucket she had to have dribbled the fluid from being stressed? she got into a fair bit of strife hence not placed this girl has a fair bit of talent and i do not want to ruin her but what do you do??
I have not nominated her any where else at the moment to see how she is coping first i hope later she can handle the later races with a bit more experience. It seems it is just not happening here in Australia either any one have any idea as what we can do a few other trainers said to me you are wasting your time they will not listen.

Hi Ellen, If you are in charge of something & someone comes/emails or writes to you with a suggestion that has merit you will probably at least give it some consideration & if it makes sense you will probably try it if you can. On the other hand if they do not deal with you & put their suggestion forward to you then nothing will happen. As I said before-lets flood GRNSW with the suggestion-I have already emailed. Cheers, Grant PS Have those "other trainers" had a go at corresponding with GRNSW or just winged on this & other sites. That doesn't help & is non productive in getting things done.
