Customs and the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are investigating the discovery of 12 greyhounds in cramped conditions in Dublin Port.

The dogs were found at the weekend in cages stacked on top of each other or piled with other boxed goods, and had no access to food or water, despite an estimated journey of over 24 hours ahead of them.

They were being transported in a Spanish registered vehicle which was operating without the correct Department of Agriculture licence for transporting live animals, a DSPCA spokeswoman said.

Nine of the greyhounds had raced in Ireland in the last month, but records from the Irish stud book indicated that two had never been raced in Ireland, and one had not raced since 2016. The DSPCA said the investigation would focus on the seller of the greyhounds, the person driving the van, and the buyer of the animals, thought to be based in Spain.

The big question is where these animals are going to and what welfare conditions are awaiting these animals at the end of the journey, the spokeswoman said. The conditions in the van would form a second element of the investigation.

Several of the dogs were found to have minor injuries and elevated body temperatures, and all of them were showing signs of dehydration. According to paperwork accompanying the dogs, they were all registered with the Irish Greyhound stud book and originate from dog trainers in Cork, Kerry, Tipperary and Wexford.

The DSPCA said the dogs had all been loaded onto the van at a facility in Co Tipperary, before travelling to Dublin port. The organisation said it is appalled by the barbaric treatment of these animals despite the revelations seen in RTÉ’s Primetime programme, Greyhounds: Running for Their Lives.

While customs officers stopped the van due to the conditions the animals were travelling in, all twelve had pet passports and were permitted to travel from a legal point of view. Racing animals are regulated by the Irish Greyhound Board (IGB), but the organisation has no regulatory oversight of the export of animals.

Nonetheless, it said it had been made aware of the incident and its welfare department is conducting a full investigation under the Welfare of Greyhounds Act to establish whether any breaches had occurred.

The IGB condemns any mistreatment of greyhounds in the highest possible terms. It said any person or persons found to be in breach of the act have been and will continue to be subject to prosecution.

The DSPCA, however, criticised the board, saying this seizure flies in the face of the illusion being created by IGB that animal welfare is being taken seriously.

The continuing grant of 16.8 million of taxpayers money is no longer acceptable, said DSPCA chief executive Brian Gillen, who also called on the Government to withdraw all funding allocated to the industry by the State

Well the shit has hit the fan for our sport. Thanks to these uncaring stupid people we are all tarred with the same brush. I sincerely hope they are all named and the IGB start taking a stand. This has already gone viral and you can bet that the antis will find out the names of the culprits.

They should be hanging their heads in shame for putting the sport at risk like that in Ireland

I hope the IGB lynch them as well as police action for animal cruelty

do they know that water and or food was not going to be provided or is it just the antis jumping to conclusions?

they are saying it wasn't provided for the journey but the dogs haven't made the journey yet right?

sorry but i question these stories sometimes as the antis can exaggerate things that r not like the picture being portrayed that's all.
were the dogs really injured or is their condition fabricated?

i've had dogs who were as healthy as anything but looking at their coat you'd think they were not looked after at all.

if guilty though then of course its terrible of anyone to do this.

Simon it was not the antis it was the Port Authorities. If you google Dublin Port Greyhounds you will see pictures and several newspaper articles. The transport was not fit for purpose. The people who handed those dogs over to this Spanish person could see for themselves what kind of travelling conditions they were subjecting their dogs to. Also who hired this guy in the first place, knowing full well of what the dogs were going to be subjected to. I condemn anyone who is willing to let their dogs go to countries that do not have any animal welfare laws. The IGB have now, got to take serious action and not sit back and do nothing, otherwise our sport could be gone forever. This could be that last nail in the coffin for us. Name and shame these pieces of shit and the person who organised the transport.

looking at the pictures there was water bowls in each cage so that is one thing that appears incorrect by the looks of it. how do they know water or food wasn't provided in that time?

but if pictures r real then yeah there was clearly not enough room for 2 dogs to the cage they were in.

also its not clear that the owners knew their dogs were in that situation is it?

were the dogs collected before and then loaded into this van without others knowing?

i agree its terrible timing so i understand u guys must be frustrated.

It is very simple to me....You make sure that the transporter have a licence issued by IGB, if not you cant send the dog. Sick of hearing about bad welfare of greyhounds, drugs etc etc ....if you cant do the things by the rules..GET THE FUCK OUT.

Simon looking at the pictures 2 greyhounds to a cage that is not big enough for 1, both greyhounds muzzled, 1 small bowl which looks empty and the greyhounds would not be able to access it with the muzzles. Loads of boxes and assorted items all around. Even so, Spain does not have any Animal Welfare Laws, which should be a main concern. It should now be up to the European Parliament to bring into force that every European Country should have Animal Welfare Laws, if they do not, then it should be made illegal to transport any living creature to these countries. Animals have feeling they cannot speak for themselves while humans can.

Assuming the details we are given are correct (no food or water) it appears to me as mistreatment.

We can blame the anti's all we want, but they didn't put these dogs in cages.

Ok to go on about anti's being over the top, but make sure our own ship is in order first..

The vast majority of greyhound owners and trainers look after their dogs, but the odd isolated incident like this will ruin the game..

Jesus Christ talk about jumping on the band wagon with out knowing any facts how do any of you know this was not a set up think about it... anyone buying dogs in Spain especially volumes of dogs know how to transport dogs it's not illegal to transport dogs to Spain so why smuggle them, all the paperwork was correct and right so it was totally legit something is not right about this... another thing why be so narrow minded about the guys that sold the dogs when every single one of us at one time have advertised dogs for sale ourselves do you honestly think the guys who sold them don't care when is the last time any of you sold a dog and followed the buyer home to make sure the dog was going to a good home..how do you know but the people who sold the dogs may have a family of kids that need looking after and Christmas only around the corner what im saying is lay off blaming our own people they didnt do anything wrong only sell a dog...the only person wrong here it the asshole transporting them.

Sorry David, you are wrong, both of you, this incident was not an 'anti' set-up, the vehicle was stopped by the Dublin Port Authorities.
The export of greyhounds to Spain should be made illegal, don't tell me that the sellers weren't aware of the likely fate of these dogs, its disgusting to read yet again of the actions of uncaring owners, whatever their circumstances, Christmas, Kids, whatever, bullsh1t.

Sorry John but im not wrong I never said it was a anti set up I said...(with out knowing any facts how do any of you know this was not a set up)...that's not directly saying it was a set up now is it...John have you ever sold a dog...and if so how do you know the person buying your dog is going to care for it how do you know his not going to send it to Spain do you carry out day to day home checks I'd doubt it so lets be real you dont have the facts so let's not speculate...your talking nonsense about a situation you know diddle squat about...thats what the antis do John don't be a anti..and as for circumstances Christmas/kids/whatever what a shitty thing to say...thats not bullshit that's real life difficulties and i can gaurantee you their are many greyhound familys in Ireland struggling to make ends meet and who are any of us to tell them what they should and shouldn't do to put a bit of food on the table...again as I said before the only asshole here is the lad transporting them...now that is my point of view based on what I know if events change obviously my point of view will to...

Dave, most of the greyhounds I purchase stay with me forever, those that retire and don't stay with me are carefully homed, I know where they are, how they are and remain in touch constantly.
The exceptions are the ones that I homed through IGB and Gaci in whom I have the utmost respect and confidence.
As the stickers say "A dog is for life and not just Christmas". A person that cant do right by a dog shouldn't be allowed to own one and if that makes me an 'anti' then so be it.

John do the owners you buy from do kennel visits to your kennel to make sure your looking after the dogs you bought from them if not surely you view them as irresponsible owners to...John your way of doing things is not everyones way some people rely on sales ect to live I respect your love for your dogs but i don't think anyone is in a position to cast judgement on anyone with out knowing any facts

David, most of the people I buy from know me, sure I am not in a position to know the facts in this case but as one dog hadn't raced since 2016 and two had never raced, what does that tell you, the sellers gave the dogs no consideration at all did they. As you say, not everyone has the same way of doing things but if everyone did it my way I think greyhound racing would have far fewer problems than they do at present.

John the people you are buying your dogs from are selling them "right" so if everyone did it your way you wouldn't have anyone to buy from your contradicting yourself without realizing it...and if you don't know the facts your not in a position to make such remarks the industry has enough going on with the closure of tracks ect with out our own people turning on each other...
