Have noticed many Greyhounds seem to be over raced many being nominated 2 to 3 times per week, with the dogs racing like tired animals with shorter races seems to be norm. With any Athlete there should be a rest period after competing and then brought back to it peak so it is able to give their Best on the Track have seen dogs draw a box that suits there racing style but nothing left in the petrol tank.

Hi Ricki To start with This is not a Anti Post I have been in
Greyhounds since 1970 It just that Now with mainly the Short races
I have noticed some greyhounds which run a good race after a spell are the backed up some times 3 times over the next 7-10 days many of them seem to be racing like tired dogs, I was just putting out my observation of the many races I have been watching lately and my knowledge of human athletic and Greyhound training . You asked for a Example I would prefer a greyhound I trained or Owned to race once a week Say race Monday night then given 2 full days for recovery then check the greyhound for any injury on the morning of the third day hand slip the dog 200mtrs on call up if dog pulls up fine Nominate for the Following Monday this gives you the chance to taper the dog towards its next start.A greyhound will give the signal that it is feeling well in it self by its body actions love to see a greyhound have a full body shake wants to play and run on the morning of its race.

Plenty doing it these days, especially with short courses. I would never have my trainer race my dogs any more than once every 5 days.. but people are desperate to get that $80 appearance fee... I'd rather look after my dogs as best as possible and run to win than collect an appearance cheque some do.

Asking a dog to back up 3 days later and produce another peak performance is an impossible task for many

American dogs tend to run three times a fortnight and can have careers of 150-200 races. They get run every 4th or 5th day on average. For a big stake race 6-7 days is common between semis and final.

Kevin there is an easy fix , bring in a rule that dogs only have no more than 5 or 6 starts per 30 days simple.

Thanks for the replies I was starting to Think I was one out in my Thinking not sure Gillian if limits on starts per month would be welcomed in the Industry but personally I agree on what you have said would be happy if this thread gave positive comments that might get people to re-think about the training of and racing of a lovely animal.

Your spot on Big Kev, our girl had her 3rd run in 10 days tonight, 5th and running on empty so I took your advice on here and didn't bet on her. - Mockers Macwollie

Tonight race 5 warrnambool VIC Australia

''Stewards spoke to Mr. C. Grenfell, the kennel representative of Vanna Bale via telephone regarding the number of starts the greyhound has undertaken in recent weeks (being 8 starts in 28 days). Mr. Grenfell stated that Vanna Bale has had 4 days since her last run at The Meadows, is worked only lightly between runs, is checked daily for any injuries, is well within herself, has been competitive in recent starts and has not displayed any signs of fatigue. Stewards noted Mr. Grenfell's comments.

Craig, if you go through the stewards' reports, there have been several others asked the same question in the last few days.

I think he answered very well.

If you are an owner and you ask your trainer about the 'over-racing' and this is your answer, what would you do?
Try and over-rule the trainer?

Wheelers obviously don't have a problem with it.

Some dogs can, some dogs cannot. Good trainers can tell the difference. Good owners will trust their trainers judgement.

More than likely mate......and I doubt any small time owner would share a kennel with a Wheeler trainer. There would be a pecking order you'd think. But still, if his answers are true maybe that dog had the ability for repeated back ups.

But it is good to be involved in a forum topic without the great Oracle taking over.
Might inspire me to buy a gold membership if he stays away.

Hello Micky G.
C'mon mate, weren't the good old days so much more fun.
My brilliant insights followed by your lousy poetry. Kevvy trying to flex his muscles with capital letters. Bowers trying to spell 2 words correctly in succession.
I miss them days.

Kevin your post may not be a anti post but will certainly play into their hands here's the thing aldough I understand your post is of good intentions what will it achieve...my guess is bad publicity so I would urge anyone posting on greyhound forums just be aware we are been watched by a certain group who want nothing only to close down the sport!

More like brilliant poetry followed by lousy insights, Quinny, but yep, have to agree that anything is better than what its been lately.
Besides that, I miss you.
