Ice On Fire retired after trial setback By Jonathan Kay 10:29am 22 SEP 2020 CONNECTIONS have officially called time on the racing career of Greyhound of the Year Ice On Fire following a setback after his latest comeback trial at Nottingham on Monday. Running in mixed company for the first time after his return from a gracilis injury, Ice On Fire had tired on the run-in to be beaten a head by kennelmate Dilly Dilly in 29.82sec (+10). He did seem to change stride pattern between the final two bends and trainer Jimmy Fenwick reported: Where he had the original issue with the gracilis there was some fibrous material which hes obviously stretched and theres been a bleed there which has shown up today. Its obviously put him out of the Derby and, given that was the one reason we were looking to bring him back, after speaking to Dave Spraggon [owner], weve come to the conclusion to retire him. We knew one setback along the way would probably mean this, but Id actually been happy with him and, in his trial on Monday, he went really well to the third bend. Id say he was a couple of runs short of doing a 29.50sec run but its not to be. Ice On Fire is to stay with Fenwick for a stud career. In the last nine weeks, hes covered seven bitches and the first of those, Rushmore Tess, whelped a litter of seven this week," he added. In addition to being available with me, there is also frozen semen with Brian Jones in Newry and Linda Mylne in Dunbar.
